I mentioned earlier today that I entered to airline stocks. Both CAL and UAUA have similar setups.
CAL shows a classic bottoming formation. Note the volume pattern. Entry close to the moving average is ideal, with the upside target at the first sign of strong resistance. I may buy more tomorrow on early morning weakness….

Recall that my Technical Strength measure is a way of quantifying the trending behavior of a stock or index. I follow a basket of 40 stocks, which consists of five highly-weighted issues within each of eight S&P 500 sectors. I sum up the Technical Strength readings for each grouping of five stocks to arrive at a general strength/weakness score for each sector.Interestingly, after Monday’s drop and Tuesday’s rise, we have 13 of the stocks in the basket trading in uptrends, 14 neutral, and 13 in downtrends. This suggests an environment of sector rotation, rather than one of general trending….

I have an email on the right side of the site toward the top, just above “About Me”. I mistakenly assumed that was the only email anyone could use to contact me. Apparently once inside my profile an old email that I rarely use anymore still existed, until about 10 minutes ago. Some of you, especially over the last week or so, have sent emails to me at that address and obviously haven’t received a response. I received them all tonight and I’ll work on answering them all tomorrow. sorry for the confusion and delay. …

My, my, my… How is it that the fickle finger of fate occasional wanders across the remote at the exact time Jim Cramer’s MadMoney show is on? And once there, it’s like a good car accident, it’s hard to pass by without taking a look, he is entertaining. And you are lucky I don’t make a habbit of watching his show, otherwise you’d see a post like this every night. So tonight he was doing the “Oh, I let you down” bit about John Thain, CEO of MER who finally made it up on the Wall of Shame. Cramer is just such an agent provocateur. Although his harsh confinement of Thain to the W.O.S. was buffeted a bit by Cramer’s admission that he’d like to own the stock if it just came back a little….

Surprisingly (at least to me), the market gave us yet another trend day, though - again - it was not your classic trend day. Let’s continue to study each trend day occurrence for clues about how to trade them for maximum profit.

It’s said that picking tops and bottoms is the most expensive job there is on Wall Street, it can also be the most lucrative and the most fun too. In all seriousness, those of you who have been around the blog for awhile now know that I’ve had 3C for a couple of years now, I’ve known that it is a powerful tool, I just haven’t known “exactly” what to do with it. I call it 3C for “compare, compare, compare”. It’s useful on daily charts, but it’s best suited to narrowing things down by comparing intraday charts. …

Chart courtesy of stockcharts ( click to enlarge )PMCS is still holding support AT $7 but at the same time has not bounce very strongly here. A break below $6.98 area will likely be bearish for stock, on the other hand a close above $7.85 on heavy volume will launch a rally….

My latest TIMalert to short 1,500 shares of USS at $4.61 today, comes just one week after a similarly perfect 30% call on MKTY and is a perfect example of the themes I’ve been blogging about for several months:
-these piece of crap companies can spike based on pathetic speculation and collapse just as quickly due to all the bitter longterm shareholders being scared/abused for so long

The opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Beijing will commence on Friday August 8. There will be huge media attention which may generate interest in some of the stocks which trade here. Ever! Not on Wall Street. Whether you are looking at Level 2 quotes or a Financial statement, a press release, an interview with a CEO on your favorite Financial network, you are being hoodwinked in some shape, form or fashion. No one is transparent about what they are up to on Wall Street. Analysts issue a buy rating at the exact top of the stock’s price or a sell at the bottom, there’s a reason for it.Last night I mentioned the unusual options activity in MER, which had the effect of spooking the market. Something was up, but who knew what? Someone did. Take into account the window dressing period is upon us and the usual suspects with the usual motivations appear (see the link to the video in last night’s post, all will be clear). So MER sold off this am and then of course, it rallied (again, see the link to the video in last night’s post and all will be clear)….

Its a funny thing… the information that new and struggling traders need the most, is the information they think they need the least. Its the element of learning to trade that is given the least attention, and often not at all, until its too late - until the bubble bursts, and the worst happens. But by then its often too late, the damage has been done….

X is a good example of why I like taking partial profits. I would have been inclined to take full profits when I had a decent gain. Instead, I took partial profits, moved my stop up to break even, and now am reaping the benefits of today’s huge breakout.
Note: I took small positions in a couple of airlines today and initiated a couple of commodity related shorts (not steel!). More details…

The market has returned to the scene of yesterday’s breakdown and now that level near 125 has the POTENTIAL to act as reistance. If you are looking to get short, wait for price confirmation before you sell, the market is comfortably above the daily VWAP at this point and odds do not favor a short sale yet….

I got several emails asking me to explain what I meant by shorting Merrill (MER) on smaller time frames every time the trend flips up and then back down, so I quickly made up this little animation. Ignore the time scale on the x-axis (it’s screwed up because I’m on China time). Let me know if this clears things up, or as usual, further muddies the waters.
