Why No Outrage? by Jim Grant
“At the end of 2007, Goldman Sachs had $26 of assets for every dollar of equity. Merrill Lynch had $32, Bear Stearns $34, Morgan Stanley $33 and Lehman Brothers $31. On average, then, about $3 in equity capital per $100 of assets. ‘Leverage,’ as the laying-on of debt is known in the trade, is the Hamburger Helper of finance. It makes a little capital go a long way, often much farther than it safely should. Managing balance sheets as highly leveraged as Wall Street’s requires a keen eye and superb judgment. The rub is that human beings err.”

Finviz.com is a relatively new website you may not have discovered yet that offers a wealth of free information, ‘heat-maps,’ and screening tools for your trading needs. I wanted to highlight a new feature, Finviz Group Performance, which gives a quick comparison across timeframes of how different sectors have performed.
Here is a sample of the 1-month performance:

The market is at an interesting juncture right now. The indices look like they’ve had nothing more than an oversold bounce last week. Most of the indices have had big percentage moves off of the lows but have failed to break their downtrends which began in May or June. They look like they could easily roll over and head lower again. But good old T2108 shows that the market is still pretty extremely oversold. As we know, when http://tradermike.net/tag/t2108/ drops under 20 that’s a good time to cover shorts and/or get long. T2108 actually got all the way down to 7.99 earlier this month and last week’s big bounce only brought it back to 19.41. So it’s still under 20 and I’d be very cautious about initiating bearish positions.

Reading this post, Monitor110: A Post Mortem, I was reminded of the post I made after watching the Wallstrip interview with Collective Intellect’s CTO:
“Sounds fascinating but I’m not sure if it works; I’d need to see it in action.”

Never Have So Many Short Sellers Made So Much Money With Stocks
“More than $1.4 trillion of equities worldwide are now on loan, about a third higher than at the start of 2007 … Short selling on the New York Stock Exchange rose to 4.6 percent of total shares last month, the highest since at least 1931 … The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last week limited so-called naked short sales of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and brokerages. In such a strategy, speculators sell shares they haven’t secured first. [N…

Above is a weekly candlestick chart of the S&P500 (SPY). You’ll notice the bullish hammer formation that has formed after taking out major support.
Notice also how the S&P500 has made lower highs each week for the last 8 weeks which in my opinion is an oversold market. I like the fact that we are seeing big volume over the last 2 weeks which can mean a washout and a possible buying opportunity…

I really wish I could stop writing about FNM and FRE, but the implications of their current situation are just too great to ignore. THIS new Economist article details their problems well so that even the dumbest, most financially illiterate of you out there can understand that these government backed monstrosities could very well take down our economy, and along with it, our precious/ideal pump and dump trading opportunities (which is why it’s relevant to us…yup, wonder why the spam campaigns haven’t been goin’ crazy the past few weeks?)

So, here it is - I talk far too much about this stock, but talking time is now over. If there´s one tiny pullback coming as wave 2, that should be another&second entry gate to go long with it - then, we should go.There should be from 4 to 6 impulse waves 3 impulses behaviour behind of it with different timeframes. If previous 38 $ is violated downside, all of my adobe hardcore work would be complet failure, that´s also area where my stoplosses are set up now, but I am planning to add from next bullback, even from very tiny one´s….

As of July 15, the stock market had declined 24% from its peak. A modest bounce approximating 10% in the 3rd quarter going into the August 5 FOMC meeting is the general expectation and as congress ratifies legislation to explicitly guarantee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by end of July. The shorts that were short into the announcement of an explicit guarantee of FNM and FRE are lifting them until the legislation is approved. …
