Bull Market in Agriculture

DBA PowersharesFor a while I have been saying it is time to “Ride the Bull in Agriculture” since I believe the bull market in food and agriculture is a virtual “sure-thing” over the coming decade and beyond.
I noted the impact that bio-fuels will have on the supply and demand equation in agriculture.  I was not supporting ethanol as a viable replacement for fossil fuels.  I try not to make the mistake of underestimating the stupidity of a government boondoggle.

A Bit of Trading Perspective at the End of the Week

* Hard Jobs - I want to thank readers for their comments on the recent post concerning trading as one of the most difficult occupations. Reader Bryan, however, offers a worthwhile perspective. As difficult as trading might be, surely it is more challenging to be an educator or health care worker in an impoverished environment. And surely it is more difficult to live in a society that does not allow private property and where no one is free to voice their views on politics, economics, and world trends: where the entire concept of owning and trading assets is foreign. We are challenged as traders, but make no mistake about it: we are blessed to live in a time when a greater percentage of the world than ever is free to own, trade, and succeed financially. …

What The VIX Can Really Tell Us

All this discussion about “trading” the VIX leads to a larger point. Are multiple stab wounds harmful to monkeys? The Onion investigates above.OK, more relevent to the site the VIX is really designed as a sentiment indicator, not a trading tool. And as such, the best signals are when it diverges from what it *should* do. Similar in spirit to a momentum divergence on a regular chart. Like in January for example, it took an oddly long time to take the market decline seriously. In hindsight, it was a noteworthy contrary tell….

XMSR SIRI Deal Update

Here’s the quick and dirty : there is about $1.37 deal spread between the two stocks, March 1 drop dead date ( either company can walk away from the deal without paying the break up fee), earnings were announced this week for both companies- no deal news, both companies are committed to trying to close the deal and are requesting an extension of up to two months. The government continues to drag their feet on this merger because they have anti-trust issues. If they wait any longer, there will be no issue, one or both will be out of business going forward. As things stand, this is not a profitable business model and the cost savings of this combination is the lifeline to satellite radio….

Whacky Wheat Whipsaw

MF Global Says Unauthorized Bets Lost $141.5 Million

“Wheat rose the most ever yesterday to the seventh record high this month, then fell by the exchange-imposed daily limit before rising again by the maximum allowed. The 25 percent rally from the day’s low to its high was bigger than all but seven annual price increases for wheat since 1973.”

Two dozen people have taken a leap of faith and subscribed so far. That’s 2% of the original 1200 on the list — I consider that a darned impressive conversion rate given my gross ineptitude at marketing, and I thank my subscribers for taking the risk.

When Wasn’t It A Mess?

In a wonderful example of stating the obvious, US Airways CEO Doug Parker had the following to say today:”Our industry is a mess, if you haven’t noticed.”Mr. Parker was referring to the current situation where we’ve entered an economic downturn and the airlines are being hammered particularly hard by sky high oil prices. At almost any time in recent memory, however, he could have made the same statement and I would have agreed wholeheartedly. When was the airline industry e…

One Way Street for the Aussie!

I know how Denarii is fond of currency spreads. Here is a look at the Aussie/USD spread. This spread has been bullish the Auusie dollar ever since the Fed cut rates in 2001. As of today, the Aussie dollar rose to its highest level in 24 years against the greenback. By 2009 this spread could be another 25% higher or more….

February 28, 2008 Stock Market Recap

I just can’t work under these conditions! The intraday choppiness got even worse today. The market gapped down then had two cycles of mini-rallies & mini-selloffs. So it was just a microcosm of what’s been taking place in the daily charts for the last month. So it’s just more consolidation as the market waits for some catalyst to push it out of its several week long trading range.
