Centrica operating profit falls but raises dividend

House prices fall at fastest rate since ‘91

Turkey: A narrow scrape for democracy

Turkey’s judiciary shrinks from banning the ruling partyBY THE slimmest of margins, Turkey has averted the worst political crisis in years, perhaps in decades. On Wednesday July 30th the country’s constitutional court turned down an attempt by state prosecutors to ban the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party on the ground that it was seeking to introduce elements of Islamic law in defiance of the state’s avowed secularism.Six of the 11 constitutional court’s judges had, in fact, voted to shut down the party. But to pass such a measure required the support of seven judges, so the court settled on the minority view only to impose a fine. This is expected to be the loss of half of AK’s state funding, which amounted to 47 million Turkish lira ($40m) last year. ……

Potash is a form of potassium chloride used as fertilizer. Its price has soared over the last year, helping to attract new workers and investment to this prairie province thought to be in long-term decline.Philipp Gauer, the mine’s general foreman, and the two other miners in the lift, wear dusty coveralls, work boots and lighted helmets. Each carries a canteen with enough water to last their 12-hour shift. In my blue paper coverall and white helmet, I look like a Smurf. ……

Deutsche Bank’s writedowns swell

Starbucks posts first loss
