An Abu Dhabi policy report makes the case for being rid of the Gulf peg to the dollarThe official position of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) that the fixed peg to the US dollar will remain in place until monetary union is achieved has never looked entirely convincing. It has suffered a further blow to its credibility with publication of a report by a department of the Abu Dhabi government suggesting that the time has come for a serious rethink of GCC monetary policy, including revaluation and a shift to a basket of international currencies as an exchange-rate reference point….

Terror in Kabul

What lay behind a devastating attack on the Indian embassy in Afghanistan?WITNESSES said that a blinding cloud of dust filled the air in the minutes after a car exploded in the compound of the Indian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, early on Monday July 7th. The dust cleared to reveal scenes of carnage in which, as with most suicide attacks in the country, Afghan civilians were the main victims. Many of those killed had been queuing for Indian visas; in total 41 people died and 141 were injured. India’s military and press attaches, who were driving into the embassy as the bomber struck, were among the dead….
