Company Blog Checkup: Fandango

Earlier this week I was wanting to get showtimes for The Dark Knight (which was excellent, BTW) at my local theater. I was quickly redirected to Fandango.com, and did some snooping and was surprised to discover that the movie ticket-selling company has a blog, appropriately titled F…

Is Hipster Homogeneity Killing Culture?

Adbusters has a controversial essay questioning whether or not today’s youth culture is inbreeding itself into oblivion. They use the dreaded word “hipster” which tends to make people argue about the definition and miss the point. The piece does raise an interesting question though -is the current cool/hipster/youth culture just an empty mash of previous cultures? Like westernization killing off indigenous traditions; is “hipster” culture an hyper-ironic recursive game that lays waste to creative thought? The article is written in typical heavy handed Adbusters style, but the ideas presented are worth thinking over.

Ypulse Toolbox: 10 Action Sports Sites To Know

Action SportsThe youth action sports subculture is one of the toughest to tap into and can’t be done without working with influencers inside the worlds of skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX or surfing. Many brands have tried and failed or failed a few times before succeeding (think: Nike). I actually think one group that has tapped this world successfully are youth ministers. They have created Christian action sports subscultures within the subcultures themselves.

HRA

A great new tool to reduce your health insurance cost is at your finger tips, it’s called an HRA. HRA stands for a Health Reimbursement Arrangement. An HRA gives the employer the opportunity to reimburse the employee for health related costs. The employer must follow these rules: they must have an HRA agreement in place, the HRA must define what health costs it will reimburse i.e. health insurance premiums, give the same dollar amount to all employees and manage the accounting for all qualified reimbursed receipts.

Ypulse Quote: How American ‘Youth Will Screw Viacom’

We’ve been tracking this for awhile now, but the writing that has been on the wall is evidently now reaching the highest levels. Young people are still consuming TV content, just not on TV but on multiple screens/devices. Time for a new model. From this post over at Wired:

The fundamental problem could be that the “youth demo” that Viacom has hotly chased after for the last couple decades is a bust. Teens and twenty-somethings don’t watch TV anymore; they don’t read newspapers; and they’re technologically promiscuous — how can big media sell advertising against them if you can’t corner them in front of any single device?…The key takeaway: Young people have left, and they’re not coming back.
