First off, apologies if I’ve had to cancel a scheduled appearance with you. I’ve gotten some great speaking invitations recently from places ranging from Google to events organized by PSFK. It’s been a busier summer than I anticipated and I’m trying to keep the plates spinning the best I can. That said, here’s a few events I’ll be speaking at in the coming months.Sept 15-19

One of the biggest frustrations for an AdWords advertiser is when a minimum bid for highly relevant keywords jump from a few cents to a few dollars without any seemingly reasonable explanation. The keyword, ad copy, and landing page can all be highly relevant. The CTR could be above 5%. The keyword converts well. Users are obviously happy to be clicking on your ads. However, when Google updates the quality score, there are days when logic and minimum bids seem to disagree.

As a b-list blogger, you often become the target of business authors, software developers, and search engine opportunists who want you to promote their wares. I love being the target of this attention, though, because I love reading books and I love seeing applications out on the market. As a product manager, I recognize how difficult it is to take an able application and turn it into a wondrous application.
It’s not often, but every once in a while, you get your hands on something special. Software should be simple, easy to navigate, with functionality that anticipates what the user wishes to do next. O…

Having spent my youth drooling over every inch of “Tank girl”, I’m dead exited that Jamie Hewlett did this. It’s awesome. It’s rawkin’ ossom, because it’s Jamie’s. Screw people who think the opposite, I’m a loyal fan. Nyah! For Audio fans, Damon Albarn did the score. Yes, that adds up to one slice of Gorillaz. How cool are the Beijing Olympics on BBC? Way cooler than anywhere else.

Ad-hacks. When comedy groups have nailed the whole execution of “real people talking about the product/lifetsyle/emotional” thing - you know you have to stop using those testimonial cut-away in nice scenery ads, right? Please? Pretty please with sugar on top? just quit doing this already!

It’s time to release into the wild another two of our Social Media Love-In lists - this time it’s all about social bookmarking.
The opportunities for collaboration and cooperation on sites like Digg and StumbleUpon are amazing. They can be powerful tools with the potential to drive significant traffic to a blog.
One of the keys that I’ve found to doing this is to have a good base of friends on the sites. As a result the following two lists could be quite significant.

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on
Search Engine Land and from other
places across the web.
From Search Engine Land:
Google “Knows” About 1 Trillion Web Items How big is Google’s web index? Google hasn’t said for years and still isn’t saying — but it is blogging today about how it "knows" of 1 trillion web-based items. Joy, we haven’t had a search engine talk about pages it knows about to confuse things since the Lycos…

A defector is a customer who is no longer buying from you. ‘No longer’ is a relative term; most companies say that a customer is no longer a customer when some well (or in some cases, not so well) defined period of time has elapsed since their last purchase.

This clever political candidate has produced a unique yardsign. The sign features the candidates’ name and likeness as well as a large white space that allows supporters to fill in their own personal message of why they are voting for him.
This is a brilliant application of offline social media and user generated content and gives the campaign hundreds of potential marketing messages and a variety of eye-catching signs instead of the same old boring uniform sign that blends into the landscape. (I suppose this could be misused, but let’s focus on the positive)

Your employees are not mind readers or fortune tellers, and your business is not a free-form venue for experimentation, or a place where individual preference based on mood, time of the day, or random circumstance can rule the day. Your purpose and methodology must be clear, concise, consistent, and understood by everyone involved. Aim for a workplace that is orderly and efficient.
Your people are at work for a reason: to earn a wage, first, and second, for the satisfaction of it. The smoother you can make things “on the ground,” the more money will be made by everyone, and the more satisfaction and success will be achieved. Here are ten steps to stopping the chaos and creating efficiency….
