Are you starting a business with a family member or a close friend?
I know, I know. You are incredibly excited. You have a winning, million-dollar idea, and you are pursuing it with one of your favorite people. What could go wrong?
Well, unfortunately, much can go wrong and sometimes it happens very quickly and unexpectedly. Let me play the heavy here and give you a strong dose of advice you can’t afford to ignore. Even if you have total faith that love conquers all, blood is thicker than water, no one understands you like your college roommate or your favorite Aunt Edna…the reality is that if you want to preserve your own interests and also preserve the relationship, you must heed my advice.

A+b+c> 3a or 3b or 3c. It is the formula that explains why integrated marketing is such an important concept. Rather than spend their total budget on advertising, for example, marketers should spread it across a range of channels that can include advertising, but also comprise tools such as product placement, PR and interactive media. The synergies, 360-degree impact and disparate strengths of each channel ensure a better return on investment.

Hi gang,
Ok, we’re all business owners here. Admit it - you’ve screwed up something before, right? Something simple, something routine, something that makes you feel like a dolt.
“You dolt” is actually what I muttered to myself on Friday as I was checking my bag in at the Air Trans counter to fly out to the Amazon Seller Conference in Seattle. My driver’s license, that wonderful 2×3 inch piece of laminated government formality, was safe and sound…at my office 15 miles away.

Those interconnected rings did use to stand for something, didn’t they? This year - with good reason - it’s all about boycotts, protests, and human rights violations when it comes to the Olympics.

When Nau announced in May that they were closing down due to funding shortcomings, we were saddened by the news. After all, only a few months earlier we had interviewed the clothing label’s VP Brand Communications, Ian Yolles, who said some very promising things about the direction of the company.

Some of you may have noticed a few recent changes at PSFK. Simply we relaunched our IF! marketing subscriber-only site as Marktd the free-for-all site. I did this for a number of reasons:
Mainly because IF! stopped being good. Yes, we had several hundred paying subscribers but in the end it was several hundred. When anything you wrote on PSFK.com could be read by to 10,000 readers on a given day - it was hard to dedicate a lot of time on a site that might be read by hundreds (despite Henry Lambert’s great support).

This afternoon I was invited to an incredible lunch and discussion with Indiana Business College. Indiana is well-known for having some of the finest schools in the country, and in the world, but the folks at IBC recognize that we’re in a rapidly changing world. They are making an aggressive push to ensure that they will stay ahead of the curve.

Today AdSense publishers (or at least some of them) received the following email outlining some recent ‘changes and improvements’ to the Google ad system.
These changes largely revolve around new features that they’ve added to AdWords to let advertisers target websites differently (more control).
One of the big changes is the introduction of ‘Ad Planner’ (currently in an invite only beta test) which allows advertisers to search for sites with certain demographics and interests. Advertisers can now also target sites with a combination of both contextual targeting (having their ads appear on pages with certain keywords) as well as placement targeting (targeting specific sites and ad positions on them).

Over on Marktd, there’s a terrific interview with Robbie Vitrano - the founder of New Orleans creative agency Trumpet. The piece describes the opening of a new office in New York and includes this piece about how NOLA has strengthened his company:
70% of our business was outside of NOLA (including clients like Fresh Direct who we launched in NY) pre-Katrina. After the storm, we made the decision to focus on home and work at the center of the recovery. After 3 years, it’s time to widen our focus. In that time, we’ve become experts at startups, launches and turnarounds, working deeply within very complex situations to design a strategic way forward, with both economic and social impacts fully considered. New Orleans is a startup laboratory.

You can’t attend a marketing conference or talk to anyone about their company’s website without hearing the words "Search Engine Optimization" or SEO. But the truth is, many business owners or marketing professionals can’t define what SEO is all about, beyond that when done well, it will result in an increase in ranking on Google.

Oliver Bishop-Young, a graduate of Goldsmiths University recently presented two projects using skips (or dumpsters). The first project is a website called Skipwaste, that lists the location and contents of skips. Users can browse for materials they need on a map based interface, sorting by categories such as furniture, wood, metal and textiles. Great way to reuse on a P2P level, saving valuable materials from the dump.

We’re usually looking forward to find innovation. what’s the next big thing? What’s coming next? Future! At times though, looking backwards might provide a richer source of inspiration. Overlooked ideas lay in wait to be revived. Simple practices long forgotten may be the answer to a present problem. There’s also the cyclically recurring retrofitting of culture, most obvious in the fashion world. Iconography of an earlier age is appropriated and remixed into a hybrid form using past style values to make a statement.
