Hello from the Amazon Seller Conference!

Hi gang,
I’m out here in beautiful Seattle at the Amazon Seller Conference this weekend.???? The conference was started several years ago by a group of Amazon booksellers, and has steadily grown to a conference of around 200 sellers this year.?? Amazon doesn’t directly sponsor the event, but this year they sent a River of 20 or so Amazonians to speak on different Amazon projects.???? Todays discussions included Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA), Amazon Web Services, Technical Services, and various other Amazon offerings of interest to sellers.?? There is a vendor area with around 30 or so vendors as well, and some of them gave presentations.?? Unlike the eBay conference,?? nobody stood up and started yelling at the Amazon employees!??

WordPress is New and Improved

WordPress has just come out with a new version, WordPress 2.6. With the release of the previous version (2.5) and continuing on with the latest (2.6), WordPress is moving past simple content management system interfaces and into the realm of true web applications to manage and manipulate data in a strong backend system. This new version includes modern features such as tracking changes (much like Microsoft Word does), browser tools to be able write posts from other places on the web, and the ability to preview and change themes with a few clicks.

Of Success, Strategy and Positioning

Success is not about having the right people, the right tools, the right attitude, the right role models, or the right organization, although all these things help. Having the right strategy is what puts an organization over the top. Strategy sets the competitive direction, dictates product planning, tells you how to communicate internally and externally, and tells you on what to focus.

A great business strategy without proper marketing will often fail in a highly competitive world.

"Who Cares About Grammer This is a Blog Not a Novel"

grammer.pngThis is a comment on an I Am Fashion blog post about hair extensions and I find it disturbing.

“Grammer” matters, says Lucy Ewing in the Denver Post “Why bother? Why does it matter? Rules in language matter as much as rules do in math. Five times eight is 40, not 39.”

What Part of the SEO Process is Hardest for You?

Posted by randfishEvery SEO has their strong points and their weak ones. For me, subjects like content creation and keyword research have always come naturally, but others like methodically using analytics data to improve and running manual link building campaigns have always been a struggle. Today, I’d thought it would be interesting to get a bit self-critical and talk about those items on the SEO-to-do-list that cause us the greatest struggles.

Still Rock the Vote Red Lipstick: A Good Idea, Poorly Executed. Sigh.

stilla.pngStilla Cosmetics has teamed up with Rock the Vote to create a limited edition of a new red lipstick and encourage women to register to vote. The site says “a percentage of the sales of this shade will go to Rock the Vote.”

Dear Stilla: This is a great idea. But this website looks like what happens when you let your ad agency create your site instead of hiring people who understand the Internet.

I will be going on vacation tonight to Europe for the next 3 weeks. Holland, France, and Germany. This means that there won’t be regular posts, but I will still try to update the site a couple of times. Take care everyone, and have a great summer.

Getting on QVC!

How do I get on QVC? This is the most frequently asked question I get from everyone, everyday.
My answer! Pray, hire a good agent and make sure you and the product are ready. Being a QVC vendor for over 8 years now, I see new products come and go every day. The things that I hear from the buyers, and the QA department, is??“Great product, it is just not ready for us yet.”

Has Blogging Lost Its Relational Focus?

Today I want to talk a little about bloggers working together - to talk about the importance of it and to reflect upon whether the blogosphere has become a less relational place.

“After years of being in an offline business I’ve recently decided to start an online business that will include a blog. However as I research the topic I notice something about bloggers and how they relate to one another that confuses me a little - they link to their ‘competitors’. I’ve always kept an eye on my competitors in the past so that I could gain an advantage over them but bloggers seem to be doing something that is counter-intuitive to me yet it seems to benefit them at the same time. I wonder if you could write something on this topic?” - question submitted by Gerald.

12 proven ways to get your post to the top of digg

Well, that was one of them. Put a number in your headline and do a list.

You know, there are a ton of tactics that you can use to increase readership. Plenty of blogs will tell you what they are.

And Rickie Lee Jones knows full well how to record a top 40 record.

Except she doesn’t. She chooses not to. She chooses to make a record she loves, instead.
