From Commodity to Brand and Back Again

When I teach a class on brand management I always begin with a continuum.

It’s a continuum that starts with the most generic of generic forms - the commodity - and ends with that most unique and specific of things - a brand.

It’s a great way to generate a strategic understanding of brand management for two reasons. First, it underlines the fact that brands are not born as brands, they are born as commodities. For example, more than a century ago, John Pemberton set out to create a tonic, not a global brand named Coca-Cola. And in 1962, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight each chipped in $550 to set up Nike, their goal was to make running shoes for athletes, not create a global leisure brand empire.

my conversation with dell

permanent332.jpg

Four years ago in “The Hughtrain” I published the cartoon above, with the following thought beneath it:: There’s only one thing harder than starting a new business: Re-inventing an old one.

Start-ups are fine and dandy, most people reading this will know all about them.

You Might Be a Digital Anthropologist…

Ethnographer

Upon recently talking about micro-interactions to the folks at Citi, I had a “micro-epiphany.”  It occurred to me that companies really need to be looking at the social revolution for possibly one reason over everything else.  Insights into human behavior that can lead to future innovations or even product/service improvements.  Point in case, as I was talking about some of the interactions I’ve had with b…

Social Media Is Always Changing… But Do You Change With It?

Social media marketing is one of the fastest changing forms of marketing online. Every time a new site, service, or community is launched, there comes both new opportunity for marketing and the possibility that the site you just spent months participating in will become obsolete.

How to Change Someone’s Mind

There’s nothing I like to study more than techniques of persuasion, and I want to persuade you to check out a website called ChangingMinds.org. You can think of it as Robert Cialdini, my hero when it comes to persuasion, on steroids. Here is a direct link to theories of persuasion but do spend time on other t…

Denny’s Contest Has No Entries. Dear Denny’s: We Won’t Work for Food.

From the how not to create a viral campaign files:

Denny’s kicked off its “America Votes 4Real” contest on July 8th and, so far, it has no entries - despite 25,000 views of a sample video. In the contest, Denny’s wants John McCain and Barack Obama look-alikes to submit a video of themselves advocating “real breakfast.” The prize? Big whoop: “Two lucky consumers” win a free Denny’s breakfast once a month for a full Presidential term.

Mowercycle: Cuts Grass & Keeps You In Shape

This half bike, half manual lawnmower was spotted by Inhabitat on dot dream’s flickr stream. Dubbed the “Mowercycle”, this unfortunately anonymous vehicle has great potential. Getting a workout while cutting the lawn fuel free means everyone wins. Although, as some Inhabitat commenter’s pointed out, the design is not perfectly functional, but it’s a start. We’ll just have to make do with b…

Yahoo Admits Google Monopoly; Deal with AOL?

Sigh. Andy, Andy, Andy. Always taking the good stories and leaving me to cover Yahoo/Google/Microsoft and their latest flings. Well, let’s get to it, shall we? Let’s spin the wheel of metaphors and see what we’ll use today . . . Mixed sports—no, sailing! Sailing it is!
(Apologies in advance if I go a little overboard. Oops, I think I already have.)
Back on the Eastern front (oops, sorry, yesterday’s metaphor)—in the capital, Microsoft has sailed into the pending G…

You’ll Never Know Unless You Ask

Growing up I was a very shy little guy. I was so shy that I rarely put myself out there in situations that I was unfamiliar with and never asked other people for favors unless I was either in desperate need or very familiar with the other person.
I remember my mum telling me on numerous occassions when I was too shy to ask people things - ‘you’ll never know unless you ask’.
It struck me today that while I’m still pretty shy that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I’d not overcome my inability to put myself ‘out there’ and had I not learned to ‘ask’ others for help.
