Empathy_circles_3

Go Deep Young Ad Man!"The problem with marketing is that it often times doesn’t allow marketers to go deep, to gain an intimate understanding of human behavior.  We’re strapped for time, spread thin and torn between making our clients or bosses happy while trying to do what we think is right.  We’ve got access to the latest trend reports, market segments, personas and metrics.  We’re surrounded by smart, capable people who, like William Hurt’s character—know what they are doing.  But there’s a question we need to ask ourselves.  Are we making the time to walk in the shoes of the people we market to?  Are we willing to swim in the deep end?"…

Private Label Brands: Too Powerful?

The typical format for managerial learning at a business school usually involves students working on case studies during their classes.

This approach often guarantees a much richer learning experience that the lecture format.

The classic criticism of the case study method, however, is that it encourages managers to believe that any problem can be solved. In fact, many strategic problems are intractable. Sometimes the biggest managerial skill of all is to learn which battles to avoid fighting in the first place, rather than to contemplate how every battle may be won.

8 Innovative Design & UI Elements That Make Sites Better

Posted by randfishIt’s been a long time since I’ve blogged about design & usability topics, but I think we’re overdue for a revisit. Luckily, in my recent web browsing, I stumbled across some remarkably innovative, uncommon design elements that made me take notice.
#1 - News via the Logo
Sites like Google, Yahoo! & Reddit are famous for using their logos to promote holidays or commemorate important dates, but several creative designers have been featuring news about their companies or their industry right in (or near) the logo:

ProBlogger Book Competition Winners

I’m so confused!

The 193 entries into my ProBlogger Book competition were all so great that I’ve spent the last hour agonizing over who to choose.

I didn’t know whether to choose winners based upon quality of the comment, the blog of the commenter and how much help it needed (and how useful the book would be to them) or any of 10 or so other factors that I could have chosen a winner on.

Forrester Says B2B Blogs are Boring

IT Business Edge blogger Ann All asks in a recent post, “Can B2B blogs be businesslike without being boring?”
She cites research from Forrester that states that “53 percent of business-to-business companies say blogging has had marginal significance or is downright irrelevant to their marketing strategies.”  Reports All:
Forrester implies the fault may lie with companies themselves, […]…

What To Do When Google Bans Your Site Because Of A Bogus DMCA Take-Down Notice

Posted by Sarah Bird, EsquireMay It Please the Mozzers,

I’ve had a few different people approach me in the last couple months because their sites have been removed by Google based on the filing of a DMCA Complaint. The notification in Google’s webmaster tools looks something like this:

In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org……

Gordon Brown answers questions on YouTube

by: Matt RhodesA few weeks ago, I posted about a social media initiative from Downing Street: Ask the PM. The idea is great - anybody can video themselves asking a question, post it on YouTube for others to comment on and vote for. And then the most popular questions are answered by Gordon Brown and posted online. I was interested to see how this initiative was going to work in practice. The terms and conditions suggested that party political and other questions might not be allowed and I hoped that the experience wouldn’t result in simple and non-meaningful questions being asked. The results of the first wave of questions suggests this is not the case at all….

Why Are Retailers Still Confused About Shoppers Who Leave Their Sites?

confused.png“About half of all people who visit a commercial Web site intending to buy something give up because, above all, they are confused—by product descriptions, navigation and checkout procedures.” That’s the lead of a Newsweek story about the various ways retailers are trying to help consumers. The answer? “…confusion-indexing programs” from companies like Live Person and 24/7. Oy vey!

What a Business Makes

I’ve owned my business now for over twenty years, I love it, wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve worked very hard to make my business what it is, but I’ve finally come to the conclusion that, after years of hard work in this endeavor - you don’t only make a business in this process; a business makes you.

Aweber to Release Subscriber Count Chicklet This Week

As a followup to my post last week on why I use Aweber to deliver my newsletters - a little bird just told me that Aweber will be announcing a scriber count chicklet in the coming days.

This new feature is to go live on Tuesday and is is similar to Feedburner’s subscriber counter in that it’ll display to prospective subscribers to your newsletter how many others have already subscribed.
