The Future of Retail: Instant Price Match

The obvious future of in-store experience: you find something you like, reach into your pocket for a small device, scan the barcode, and the device tells you whether and were the same product is available for a lower price. Brick-and-mortar stores become little more than showrooms for merchandise bought elsewhere…

The Death Of The A-list

It’s July 2008. Robert Scoble walks the early morning iphone3G line yelling “you’re live on the internet” while broadcasting live on his Nokia phone via Qik.com. But does anyone care what he’s doing or knows who he is? From the looks of the dreary eyed people in line, the answer is no, they just want to get their iphone and go home.
Later that same day, Jason Calacanis decides to t…

Banners and The Right Click

Do banners that allow standard right-click navigation options — “open in new window” and “open in new tab” — have higher click-throughs, other things being equal?

Attitude, Behavior and Brand Loyalty

Allan L. Baldinger and Joel Robinson of The NPD Group conducted a major study to better understand the link between attitude and behavior in brand loyalty.  They found the following:

•    The larger the brand, the larger the group of consumers whose attitudes towards the brand are stronger than their behavior (“prospects”) and the larger the group of consumers whose attitudes toward the brand are weaker than their behavior (“vulnerables”).

Yahoo Still Fighting the Good Fight

I knew you were wondering, since none of us are sure these days, but Yahoo is still giving it the old college try. Here’s the latest from the Yahoo battlefront.
Although a few of our commentators insist that the Yahoo/Microsoft deal is all but inevitable, Rupert Murdoch disagrees. And I think he might know—after all, his properties, especially News Corp, have been c…

I drew pictures at a sales meeting, and it worked

I made a public promise on this week’s telechat with Dan Roam, author of The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures. The promise was to use the techniques that Dan recommends at a very high-powered sales presentation that I was to give yesterday to a big potential partner.

Does Twitter Distract From or Inspire Your Blogging?

Sarah from Blogversary emailed me earlier today with a question/observation about some people and their use of social messaging tools like Twitter and Plurk. Her email included:
Do think Twitter has had a negative impact on some folk’s blogs? As in, they are blogging less?
My initial reaction to her email was to think of a number of bloggers who’ve all but disappeared from their blogs since discovering Twitter. The ‘distraction’ element of Twitter has been profound for them.

Envirofit’s Super Efficient Biomass Stove

Envirofit, a US nonprofit has created an innovative cooking stove for use in developing countries. Traditional cooking stoves burn all kinds of biomass including wood, crop waste and animal dung. The problem being that they spew out lots and lots of nasty smoke. Added to the fact that these things are used indoors and it turns into a huge problem. 1.5 million people a year (mainly women and children) die in indoor pollution related deaths.

BMW’s Kinetic Sculpture

714 metal balls cascade, seemingly floating unaided midair in BMW’s kinetic sculpture. The matrix of spheres undulates in organic patterns, coming to rest in the shapes of classic and modern BMW designs. Each ball is raised and lowered independently by near invisible strings, enabling them to take on any form. This piece is one of 125 exhibits on display at their museum in Munich.

Channeling Something Positive From ‘Bad Avatars’

Hacker TeenI did a taped interview earlier this week for The CBS Early Show on “avatars behaving badly” — it’s supposed to air on Monday morning (and I might do a live interview at 5 a.m.) but of course, it might get bumped, too (it was supposed to air Thursday and today so far…). Anyhow, one of the questions focused on how teens will hack into each others’ accounts, steal virtual stuff, or find other ways to “cheat” in virtual worlds. What was interesting to me is the gray area of this being “wrong” yet the ingenuity and skill kids/teens demonstrate by being able to do this in the first place. It reminded me of the school administrators I’ve met who tell me about how their kids can get around filters, set up proxies, etc. in order to check their MySpace accounts from school. Granted, hacking an account and stealing someones virtual furniture is different from hacking through blocks and filters to check your MySpace messages. One actually hurts another person, the other, breaks a rule but doesn’t directly hurt another person. Both show how for some kids who have grown up using this technology from an early age, figuring out ways to get what they want digitally, seems almost intuitive. …

Monthly Teen Mag Roundup

CosmogirlAug.jpgWith “High School Musical 3″ hitting theaters soon, it was inevitable that Vanessa Hudgens would end up on someone’s August cover — and CosmoGIRL! snagged her. The actress chats about dating Zac Efron, recording a music album, and those pesky naked pictures that leaked online last year. Other young Hollywood highlights include “Mamma Mia!” star Amanda Seyfried, “The House Bunny” lead Anna Faris, and little-sis-to-Lindsay Ali Lohan. Right on the heels of Jamie Lynn’s “perfect pregnancy,” CG explores the growing trend of teen girls who get pregnant on purpose. Not a growing trend just yet is the story of a high school freshman who’s mother married her 19-year-old classmate. On the back-to-school front, learn how to replicate runway-to-real life fashion and beauty.
