Hotels.com probably doesn’t like Tech watch after this.

Really, I should quit worrying about what ad-support might do to editorial content, it doesn’t stop anyone on TV from reading bad news about their own sponsors. Or - some media buyer is getting fired over this.

Via why advertising sucks.

Yahoo! Lets You "Build Your Own Search Service"

yahoobossicon

Yahoo! has just unveiled the next phase in their plan to spur search innovation by providing search-related resources to developers. The Yahoo! Build Your Own Search Service (BOSS) enables developers to access Yahoo! search results, combine them with other sources, rerank them, and define their appearance. Yahoo! says they are making BOSS available in attempt to spur innovation in the search space and disrupt the market. They point out that unlike with other web companies, a search startup has many obstacles: from cost (it takes a lot of machines to process all the web’s data) to expertise (some of the world’s smartest PhDs work at the major search engines) to historical data (which search companies can only get a hold of by that old-fashioned method of waiting).

Me.dium Launches "Real Time" Social Search

Me.dium has introduced a social search engine that blends results from a “real time” index of what people are currently viewing online with Yahoo’s full-scale web index. The result is something I’ve not seen elsewhere—and despite my long time skepticism regarding social search, this approach actually holds promise for delivering a unique view of relevant content on the web.

The current alpha version of Me.dium Social Search …

I Need A Vacation From My Vacation!

Hi gang,
So how many of you said to yourself when you read that title, “He’s got kids”.
Lol - you’ve got kids too, eh?
For those of you without children,?? read that title again when you do - you’ll get it.
I just spent a wonderful 6 days in Wisconsin at a log cabin at a campground where my in-laws also have a permanent spot.?? We all had a blast - lots of swimming,?? golf cart rides (that’s how you get around a campground if you’re cool), 4th of July fireworks,?? hot dogs and cheeseburgers on the open fire pits, a boat ride - it was great.?? About 3 days in I forgot what I did for a living.

Abercrombie’s XXL-Sized Problem

There are few bigger fans of Abercrombie & Fitch than me. I may not be able to squeeze into any of its clothing, but this is a company that fits perfectly with my idea of what makes a great brand.

Founded in 1892 by David T Abercrombie, it took A&F a century to move away from its stuffy outfitter image. The key to this transformation was Mike Jeffries, who took over stewardship of the brand in 1992. From the outset, he positioned A&F around youth and sex with a targeting strategy that explicitly communicated that the brand was only for the young, the thin and the beautiful. Jeffries was entirely comfortable with the idea of excluding most segments from his brand, once responding: ‘Are we exclusionary? Absolutely, some people don’t belong in our clothing and they can’t belong.’

Australians Getting Raw Deal iPhone 3G Plans

Australians Getting Raw Deal iPhone Plans

I don’t usually go off topic here at ProBlogger but just having seen the Telstra Plans for the iPhone 3G (a device I was excited to be able to use in my blogging) I’m incredibly frustrated.
If you’re sick of iPhone blog posts today - feel free to skip this little rant - but I needed to get it off my chest.
Having had to wait until tomorrow to officially be able to buy an iPhone in Australia (I resisted the urge to import one and hack it like 60,000 other Australians did) I was excited that Apple were going global with the iPhone 3G. I was also excited to hear Steve Jobs talk about it’s affordability.

True Story: Drop Database? Click… Doh!

The following is a true story, dated today at approximately 11:00 AM. This is NOT a paid post, but I have added a HUGE link to the company in appreciation of them saving my butt!
Development 101 says that when you mess with your code or your data, you always first do a backup. No exceptions. The 15 minutes it may take to do that backup could save you months or years of work.
Today, I broke Development 101.
While I was deleting a plugin, I noticed that there were some accompanying tables associated with the plugin. I quickly selected the tables and clicked D…

The Appeal of "New" is Hardwired

Dr. Bianca Wittman of University College London found that making novel choices activates the ventral striatum of the brain. This area is associated with rewarding behavior. Thus, labeling a product as “new” may increase its sales because of this brain wiring. Also, familiar brands also cause higher levels of brain activation, so the perfect pitch may be a new product from an established brand. Hmm, “Apple iPhone,” maybe? Read more about the study h…

The limits of meta

Blogging about blogging, writing about writing, documentaries about documentaries, songs about songwriting…

It’s tempting to use a medium to write about the medium.

It works for a while, but there’s a limit. Pretty quickly, you hit a natural ceiling and you won’t be able to go any further. The most obvious trap online: websites that make money by teaching you about making money by using the web.

Three tools for seizing control of your business and personal life

In Western culture, the word “control” has an undeserved bad rap. It conjures up the image of a type-A personality gone wild with power, who, headed down the road of personal self-destruction, cuts wide swaths of anxiety among all those encountered. “Control freak” is a term that often surfaces. But if hyper-control is a bad thing, do we want the opposite, to be out of control? As we search for a middle ground, let’s not forget the brutal reality: Each of us will someday lose control of all that we have. Life is ephemeral and “survival is temporary.” We will die someday. Still, while we “go with the flow,” this doesn’t mean we should navigate without reason, care, or attention to detail. On the contrary, control’s four horsemen of self-discipline, planning, efficiency, and consistency go a long way toward securing a sense of longevity and calm….

Perspective Gives Meaning

The way you view something gives it meaning. It doesn’t really matter what an author’s or artist’s intent is - you the viewer, the reader, give the work meaning. (No one sees the world as it is, we merely see it as we see it.)
So, if you’re still with me on this, what if you used this notion to intentionally find new meaning in things that could help you grow your business. What if you could unearth a treasure chest of creativity by simply looking at things differently. Fact is, most of the world’s greatest inventions came about when someone took a proven winner and gave it a new use or a new meaning.

Virgin America Upgrades The Flying Experience

Charles Ogilvie is speaking at PSFK Conference San Francisco next week and Boing Boing has a video tour showing the amazing in flight systems he designed. Some of the features include; mood lighting, in seat games, computerized food ordering and inter seat chat. Wireless internet is on the way soon. There’s even inventory tracking systems for the flight attendants. Knowing what’s selling, and what isn’t helps them order more accurately and prevents waste. Very cool stuff that could make the flying experience a heck of a lot more enjoyable.
