I was working last week with the marketing directors of a multinational biotechnology company. It manufactures a device that alleviates the symptoms of a commonly occurring affliction.
We were running five groups of patients to identify whether the device was working to their satisfaction and to learn more about their perceptions of the condition. But it was clear from the outset that something was very, very wrong with our focus groups.

The biography of George Costanza is five times as long as that of Tim O’Reilly.
As Wikipedia matures, there are hard decisions to be made about depth and breadth. Shouldn’t Tim’s entry be many pages long? He’s one of the great thinkers of our time. If IBM and Jones Soda …

Part 7: Tweet, tweet: Microblogging considerationsMicroblogs like Twitter are getting a lot of attention these days, in no small part because some big companies are using them to talk to their customers. If you are considering it, here are the key considerations:
Are your customers there?
Do you have the bandwidth to staff this rapid fire communications channel?
Can your reps take action to solve any issues? Sympathy is nice but people will want solutions.

John McCain: “Now we’ve got the cables. We’ve got talk radio. We’ve got the bloggers. I hate the bloggers. We’ve got all kinds of sources of information.”
Hey, I’m not crazy about him either. He said this in December, but it bears repeating since he’s also said that he doesn’t use a computer. That puts him out of touch with much of the world, and certainly with the young people who are going to be the swing vote in this election. Just goes to show what an inflexible and out of touch old fossil McCain is.

“If You’re Open to Growth, You Tend to Grow” should be required reading for managers and parents. It summarizes the work of Carol Dweck from Stanford. Key passage:
Those who believe they were born with all the smarts and gifts they’re ever going to have approach life with what she calls a “fixed mind-set.” Those who believe that their own abilities can expand over time, however, live with a “growth mind-set.”

Sometimes, busy people need to remind themselves (and us) how busy they are by shaving off the last two seconds of what would otherwise be a pleasant interaction.
At a restaurant yesterday, the maitre d, who is paid to be busy, looked up our name in the reservations book and then said, “over there against the wall,” while he pointed. He repeated this approach with at least three other parties.
How much longer to say, “Welcome, we’ll be ready for you in just a second. Would you mind waiting over there please?” Amazingly, saying that while smiling takes precisely the same amount of time.

I’ve written before about the potential of the online suite of tools under the banner of Zoho.
I really have not used them all enough to give glowing reports, but I’ve got to say I am totally impressed by the pace at which they seem able to release new tools and enhancements.

ONE | FREE-DUMB?
“Shopping at sales is just one of the ways I fool myself when it comes to money,” writes Alina Tugend in the NY Times. Her point is that getting stuff for free, such as 2-for-1 sales and Free Delivery, isn’t bad. However, it can lead us to make dumb decisions. Provocative stuff. >> R…

I’m currently writing this from a Westin Hotel where I’m unhappy. Why? Because, after paying a good chunk of change for a room, dealing with pleasant staff, and finding an immaculately prepared room upon my arrival, I was then forced to pay $13 for an Internet connection.
That’s insulting.
So, after reluctantly coughing up the dough, I hopped online to see what I could learn about which hotel chains offer free WiFi and which ones don’t. And what did I find? T…
