Beware of Branding Success

During the 90s, from unlikely origins in the small country of Finland, there emerged a remarkable manufacturing story. Nokia, once a heavy industrial conglomerate, began producing mobile phones that captured consumer imaginations across the globe. By the turn of the millennium, Nokia became almost the generic mobile phone. It was the essence of a market leader.

Being a market leader is cause for great jubilation. But if we look beyond the immediate advantages, a more disturbing picture emerges. Throughout history, one challenge has done more damage to leading brands than any other: success. Becoming the number-one brand in any market brings with it new, potentially fatal dilemmas.

Go See James Braly’s Show, "Life in a Marital Institution"

James Braly’s one-man show, “Life in a Marital Institution: 20 years of monogamy in one terrifying hour” is terrific. He’s fast, funny, warm, clever, insightful, and makes you feel like you were in the room when the events he shares took place. Most of all, he’s the kind of guy you’d want to have a beer with. You get all that from his hour-long intimate monologue in the unbelievably uncomfortable Soho Playhouse (through August 31st.)

Google: Expects Viacom Will Take YouTube Data Without User Info

Since writing my
WTF! US Court Declares You Have No Privacy On YouTube article, more
information has come out suggesting that Google will be able to turnover
information to Viacom about what’s watched on YouTube without having to say
who exactly who was watching it. Nor, does it seem, that Viacom itself wants
that level of detail. So perhaps a bullet will be dodged on the privacy
front. More below, including some direct answer from Google.

Hi-Tech Super Material Made Out Of Rice Husks

A Malaysian scientist has discovered a revolutionary method of producing aerogel using waste rice husks. Known for it’s ghostlike appearance, aerogel has many possible applications including insulation and as a shock absorber. The strong, light weight substance (it’s 99% air) is made of silica, which composes 20% of the weight of rice husks. Using husks as the source of silica for Aerogel drastically cuts the cost of production.
