The Power of Breaking Consumer Compromise

I believe “breaking consumer compromises” is one of the most powerful concepts in business today.   Introduced by George Stalk, Jr., David K. Pecaut, and Benjamin Burnett in a Harvard Business Review article in late 1996, it states that the best way to create breakaway business growth is to identify all the ways in which a business has made compromises with the consumer and then break them all so that that consumer gets exactly what he needs and wants.

By Frank Reed.
An article in today’s Wall Street Journal by Lee Gomes the Long Tail theory popularized by Chris Anderson’s book “The Long Tail” in 2006 there is now a pretty prominent player saying “Wait a minute now…..is this for real?” The Harvard Business Review has published a study that questions whether this theory actually holds water. Microsoft Planning Another Yahoo Run

Sometimes we just can’t let dead horses lie. That’s okay, neither can Microsoft. After months of more drama than a daytime soap (ahem) with the attempted merger/acquisition of Yahoo, Microsoft pulled their offer back in May.
And now they’re saying, “Whoopsiedoodle. On second thought . . . we w…

RIP, Ask City

First IAC took itself apart, now Ask is slowly dismantling its cool features, too. Chris Pendleton, a Virtual Earth evangelist, has posted that Ask has dropped its own mapping features—Ask Maps, AskCity and map results integrated into their SERPs—in favor of Live Virtual Earth (Microsoft’s maps product).
In some regions, the change is even more drastic. As B…

Learn Word of Mouth Marketing from the Guy Who Wrote the Book

Seriously, my friend Andy Sernovitz did write a great book called Word of Mouth Marketing.
Now he’s hosting a small-group word of mouth marketing seminar. Usually he only does private training for companies at a very large price, so this is a rare chance for 50 people to get the best introduction to word of mouth that there is.

APC Selling Pre-Worn Jeans

French clothing company APC has come out with new jeans that are either innovative or ridiculous depending on your point of view. The “Butler Worn Out” series are weathered, not by the traditional sandpaper method but rather by humans wearing them. This unconventional and time consuming method produces the desirable marks and soft feel of old jeans. To anyone considering these buying these (probably really expensive) pants, I have a suggestion: try a used clothing shop, lots of human pre-worn jeans there.
