Early on in the life of ProBlogger I produced a weekly newsletter that ran parallel to this blog.
I did this as a way for readers to keep in touch with the latest information about the blog, get a little exclusive inside information on what I’d been doing, to promote new products and services available to bloggers and to make advance announcements about ProBlogger. The newsletter was well received by readers in the main, I could tell this from the emails I’d receive on those weeks that I didn’t get one out on time as people often emailed to ask where it was (always a good sign).

China in Tricky Get Bloggers*

By Frank Reed.
Leave it to bloggers to find a way around censorship.
On the heels of the Olympic Games in Beijing riots broke out in the Guizhou province of China over the death of a teenager according to the Wall Street Journal. While the Chinese government worked hard to prevent this from becoming a political and PR black eye before they parade themselves on the world stage that is the Olympic Games bloggers appear to have gotten the best of them.

Branding Desperately Needs to Rebrand Itself

Once in a while a consultant gets lucky and encounters a trend before it takes hold across their marketplace. Over the past few months I think I have been running up against just such a trend and it worries me.

I am increasingly convinced that the biggest challenge brand managers will face over the next decade will be protecting the brand of brand.

Let me share three recent experiences with you and then I will explain exactly what I mean.

Designer Dolls, Literally

As her final project for Central Saint Martins, designer Olivia Lee created a series of limited edition designer dolls, literally. Each figurine takes the likeness of an iconic designer of our time, including Zaha Hadid, Karim Rashid, and Jaime Hayon. In Lee’s own words:

Real estate has been a more frequent topic recently on Marketing Pilgrim and I promised to write about recent stats on what real estate related terms people are typing in search engines. Skype’s Laughter Chain is Sort of Funny - But It’s Not a Viral Til It’s a Viral

Skype has created what it hopes will be a viral video to market its free video calls. It’s The Laughter Chain, and they want you to join it. While the video definitely has a few funny moments that made me laugh, it’s also got canned, fake laughter — and, well, that’s just not funny.

Nonetheless, the idea’s cool, and a technological wonder to non-geeks like me. Plug in your webcam, or the built-in camera on your Mac (eat your heart out PC people); watch the Laughter Chain video, as you film yourself watching it. Sign their terms, press send, and your video is sent to Skype for possible addition to the chain video.

Make an opportunity, solve a problem, part I

Mondays just fail to register for me when I don’t hear the stopwatch on Sunday evenings. I saw this segment on Plumpynut for the second time on 60 Minutes. I’m glad this topic has come around again, and felt just as dumbfounded as to why this is such a difficult problem to solve this time as I did the first time. …

Temporary Health Insurance, Is It Right For You?

As you start your new business you need to think about your health insurance and its costs.  If you have left an employer that offered you health insurance then you will be offered COBRA.  Typically, COBRA can range between 102%-150% of the cost of the group health insurance.  If you are healthy, the best thing to do is purchase individual health insurance as soon as posible but not temporary insurance.  Temporary health insurance can cover that employment gap when you are going from one employer to another but it has a limited time period 30days to 6 months and a low benefit amount.  Rather, you shoud purchase individual health insurance that will save you thousands of dollars compared to COBRA.  In addition, once you are approved for individual health insurance you can’t get “fired” by the carrier as long as you pay your premiums.  Even if you think your new company is going to offer health insurance a Health Reimburement Arrangement (HRA) would be the best way to take advantage of the lower cost individual health plans while receiving a tax benefit of group insurance.  Also, your premiums can’t increase if you get sick while being insured.  The carrier can only raise your premiums based on the people in your age range, sex and zip code….

SearchCap: The Day In Search, July 1, 2008

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on
Search Engine Land and from other
places across the web.
From Search Engine Land:

The Long Road To The Debate Over “White Hat Cloaking” I really hate arguments over cloaking. Like really hate them. But Rand Fishkin recently did a chart outlining the degrees of "safeness" to cloaking that in turn riled up Google’s Matt Cutts in comments there. No doubt others at search engines also dislike the idea that any cloaking is…

From Sentient to Responsive Cities

responsive cities.png
Fabien Girardin from MIT SENSEable City Lab has a fascinating presentation available online which describes how cities could become “responsive” thanks to new urban actors that can monitor activity real time. Technology like mobile phones, speed cameras, pollution sensors and CCTV systems could be used to make the city react to its population. There aren’t too many examples of how this might happen, but Girarden explains why this will probably happen. On his site, he says:

Pic: Which Food Is Seasonal At Your Farmers’ Market?

seasonal-shopping-list.jpg
Not all food sold at Farmers Markets can be considered ‘good’. Long-term refrigeration and heated green-house agriculture offset the environmental benefit of eating ‘local’. This sign at the Union Square market in New York seems to do a good job educating people what seasonal produce should be available.
