I know… The home office sounds to some like a place where you might escape the wound-up intensity of the corporate world. But the home-based business warriors in the StartupNation community know better. Just because we’re working from home and sidestepping the commute-and-cubicle drudgery doesn’t mean our feet are kicked up on our desks as we watch reruns on the TV in the background.
The fact is that we’re incredibly passionate about what we do. We start early, digging right in, jamming away on our website updates, getting that game-changing proposal out the door. And we demonstrate consistently to our clients that we’re “always available,” 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gratification that comes from making the tough decisions, answering to no one, mustering up the creative solutions, breaking through with a client—all in a favorite pair of blue jeans—is beyond compare.

This is a phrase I’m growing tired of - quickly - during this presidential candidacy. I’m not sure who penned the original term but I’ve seen it used widely this season. Most recently, the governor of West Virginia used the term to discuss why Barack Obama lost West Virginia in a landslide to Hillary Clinton. He’s trying to defend the opposition view that West Virginia still has race issues and Obama lost it simply because he didn’t spend enough time p…

I recently did a phone interview for the User Interface Resource center which is sponsored by the folks at Adobe, Microsoft and Effective UI. The folks at Effective UI were interested in having an informal discussion around the concepts of "high design vs. low design" that is, highly-designed "experiential" applications that push the limits of technology and human interaction (Think slick desktop applications) vs. solutions that don’t quite push as hard on (think Craigslist, Flickr, or Twitter). Any insights provided may be rooted in common sense. We use philips screwdrivers for cross head screws and regular screwdrivers for regular screws. Skilled practitioners know they should carry both….

Knotheads.com and Bag Borrow or Steal are two little companies who are betting that a combination of Internet marketing and traditional PR can be their ticket to stardom.
Knot Heads launched March 19, 2008, selling a bendable hair accessory meant to replace rubber bands, bobby pins, barrettes and the dreaded claw! Bag Borrow or Steal’s been around since 2004, has venture funding, and is hoping to hit the big-time thanks to a 10-second mention in the “Sex and the City” movie.

A little more than a week ago, the always innovative Cooper Union played host to Tokion’s 5th annual Creativity Now Conference, a yearly culling of what’s cutting-edge in art, music, film, fashion and comedy. The impressive line up boasted big names such as David Cross as well as indie darlings Harrell Fletcher and David Shrigley. However, one of the most anticipated events of the conference was an appearance by wunderkind filmmaker and screenwriter Harmony Korine (”Gummo”, “Kids”) joined by longtime friend and collaborator Mark Gonzalez, who is often credited as being the man who brought street skateboarding culture into the mainstream. As soon as they took the stage, they proceeded to bring the crowd into a somewhat befuddling verbal punning game playing on famous people’s names (for example : “Fred was dying of Durst” and the less tactful “Heath was hanging off a Ledger”). While this exercise seemed a bit irrelevant, Korine and Gonzalez went on to explain that in their early days as skate punks on the Lower East Side their creativity tended to come from a place of spontaneity, blind passion, and enthusiastic collaboration- often springing from something as mundane as a word exercise….
