The Power of Being One

Farewell Norwich Union. After more than 200 years, it is about to be buried in the big brand graveyard. As we speak, a plot is being dug, right next to Midland Bank and opposite British Rail.

Whenever a company buries an asset that has been two centuries in the making, questions will be asked. However, what seems like a radical move actually makes perfect marketing sense for parent company Aviva.

For starters, Norwich Union, like most financial-services brands, is no longer an organically built, single-branded house. Recent consolidation in the sector has seen Norwich Union merge with CGU, which was created by an earlier merger between Commercial Union and General Accident.

Optimizing for Indented Listings

The devil is in the details and sometimes it is easy to overlook opportunity even when it is staring you right in the face. Thankfully not everyone misses the obvious opportunities to take advantage of the hard work they have already done.
Andy Beard has an excellent nearly step-by-step explanation as well as links to a video, from Stomper Net made by Andy Jenkins, showing how to take an existing Google listing and work to get an indented listing to go along with it. …

SF Chronicle on Neuromarketing

by: Roger Dooley I’ve been trying to catch up on the neuromarketing press after my lengthy trip, and found that an article in the San Francisco Chronicle provided a nicely balanced, if not highly detailed, look at the field. The story focuses on two Bay Area firms, NeuroFocus and Emsense Corp….

Eco-labels Impact Consumer Behavior

by: David WigderEco-labels influence consumer behavior in two ways. First, they introduce green as a considered attribute at the point of sale. Second, they enable consumers to comparison shop based on green. Over the past few years, there have been many new eco-labels launched by governments, manufacturers and retailers. Many of these labels are listed on Consumer Reports’ G…

Today Dustin M. Wax writes about how to write Review Post on your blog.
Reviews are one of the mainstays of blogs. By now, everyone in the world is familiar with Problogger’s own Darren Rowse’s accidental transformation into a professional blogger following the success of his camera reviews. (Been off-world for the last two months and don’t know the story? R…

Working Through the (Holiday) Weekend

Woo-Hoo!! Memorial Day weekend is here!! It’s the unofficial kickoff to the summer months. A time when the working world gears up for outdoor activities, fun and frivolity. Today in my hometown of Detroit the baseball Tigers, basketball Pistons and hockey Red Wings all have home games, two of them playoff games, and one of them the Stanley Cup Finals. There are picnics and barbecues, and happy hours and everything but work going on all day long.

Pitch clinic: When good pitches go bad

Changing up the promised order a bit because I want to do justice to the Jim Beam social media pitch and haven’t had the time to really dig into the program itself the way I’d like before commenting. So today I’m going to share some ways good pitches go bad, and what you can do to fix it.
The first comes via Twitter pal and environmental blogger Chris Baskind who tweeted the other day about a bad pitch. Never shy, I asked if he would share. Here’s the scoop.

Review: MarketingSherpa’s 2008 Online Advertising Handbook & Benchmarks

How much do you spend on online advertising each year? $5,000? $50,000? $500,000? Or perhaps $5 million?
Let’s assume you spend $50,000 per year on ALL of your online advertising. What if you could spend just 0.01% of that budget and potentially increase the visibility, clickability, and conversions of all your online ads?…

How Techie are CIOs?

After attending the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, I left wondering how techie the CIOs attending really are. I have no doubt that they’re extraordinarily competent when it comes to interacting with boards, understanding budgets, and negotiation large IT contracts, but what about this: One panel of four was asked if they had Skype accounts. Only one of four did.

Now, I can certainly understand that an CIO shouldn’t be devoting time to giving a personal test-drive to every new start-up mentioned on TechCrunch, but Skype isn’t just any start-up. The company has been around since 2003 and was acquired by Ebay in 2005. At any time, millions of people are using the product around the world to chat, talk, or video chat with people all over the world.

Rough edges and attention

Upssafety/img>
Most of the time, people notice the If you want to get noticed, don’t be so polished.

This UPS truck has a haphazardly affixed SAFETY sign hanging from the back. Think that’s unintentional? UPS does it on purpose. You notice it because a human being did it.

Cabot - Tidal Wave

Cabot Spots launched a television campaign created by its advertising agency Euro RSCG Chicago. This new spot uses dynamic special effects to support its premium line of interior and exterior coatings and stains. Shot on the coast outside of Capetown, South Africa, the commercial uses computer-generated effects to represent a striking departure from typical advertising in the stains category.”

A chance to be on the cover of my new book

It’s about you, after all.

If you’d like to be on the cover–at least in a teeny tiny little section of it– (no promises, none at all–the cutting room floor is bigger than the cover), send a photo of yourself (headshots are best) to me here. If you’re lucky, you’ll join a thousand other handsome folks immortalized in print.

It will only be read by a computer, so please don’t send me any details or notes. It could even get you on the Dick Cavett show. The book is out in October and I’m not talking about it, not one bit, for months. But lead times are long, so here you go. Deadline is May 31. Here’s your chance to be slightly famous.
