A couple of years ago, I wrote a thesis on in-game advertising. One chapter about history didn’t make it into the final version, but now you can view and download the entire chapter in its original format, complete with proper references. Here, I am publishing a series of excerpts, illustrated, where possible, with screenshots and gameplay videos that have began to appear on YouTube. This first installment deals with the early years of advergames. The next one will be about brands and arcades….

In this post Frank Warren from PostSecret answers my question - ‘when was the Tipping Point of your blog?’
My story might be a little different because my blog is dependant upon anonymous users mailing me silly, sexual or shocking secrets on postcards.

How much would you pay to use Twitter? How about Facebook? Gmail? Would answering a simple “How much would you pay for it?” question help us to understand how the valuable is perceived differently from the disposable?I was going through a credit card bill and among the usual sad thoughts the activity conjures there was one relevant to this blog. There are a lot of online services out there, and I’m actively using a fraction of them. I pay for some, but many are free. The question is, why am I paying for the ones that are on my bill even though there are free alternatives, and which free ones would I pay for if the free ride abruptly stopped, and it was either-or?…

No matter what your attitude towards the Google-Yahoo-Microsoft triangle may be, such a title definitely makes you ask yourself a few questions. “The Real Google Killer”, no question mark? Nope, not this time. Yes, the real Google killer is out there and it’s only a matter of time until the inevitable occurs.
Am I referring to Microsoft? Even if they’d be willing to invest a pretty penny in order to make that happen, they don’t have what it takes at this point. What about Yahoo!? Given the way things stand financially as far as this company is concerned, they are hardly in such a position. Maybe Ask.com? You’ve got to be kidding me!

Aaron Wall has an excellent explanation of why a click costs so much more on Google on average than a click for the exact same term on Yahoo. As he explains, it really comes down to the quality of the syndication partners Yahoo has partnered up with to display ads:
How Click Arbitrage & Dirty Ad Syndication Killed Yahoo! Search MarketingPut another way, a Yahoo! click for mortgage is worth the same $15 that it costs on Google, but it goes for less than $5 because Yahoo! forces advertisers to eat junk traffic too. If Yahoo! virtually killed off their syndication partnerships (at least all but the cleanest ones) their short term revenue might decrease, but their click values & click prices would sharply increase….
