As if it weren’t enough that buying a domain name requires all sorts of linguistic acrobatics, creating an account with popular social networks and other online utilities is starting to be taxing as well. Pages at myspace.com/McDonald’s, GAP, Applebee’s, IBM, X…

We don’t know the name of the first brand. What we do know is that up a grassy mountainside a few millennia ago, a big Norse farmer was getting a bit annoyed about having his cows stolen. In a fit of Viking desperation, he started to burn his initials into his cows to stop them being nicked. Brandr, the Norse word for fire, became our operative verb. An industry that would dominate marketing was born not from the desire to differentiate or connect with consumers, but from the simple need to mark ownership and origin.

The results of our poll on how Online Marketing Blog readers use Twitter are in. We had over 220 responses, which isn’t a bad sample considering this blog is fairly niche with a modest sized (and very smart) audience. Below I’ve listed the poll results and a few comments on each.

Today in my mail I received a blue envelope that had my name and address neatly printed on the front. The reply address was a P.O. Box but it still appeared handwritten. When I flipped the envelope over, it had the Hallmark seal on it. The curiosity got the best of me and I opened it to find a card with the following message:

Google today announced that it has launched YouTube Insight - a tool for giving insight into who is watching your videos.
So today I logged into YouTube to see what information I could glean about the viewers of my videos. from the new stats. Here’s what I learned about who is watching my videos:
Across my Channel they are predominately male (64%) and in the 45-55 year old bracket (36%):

I’ve been trying to think of a way to illustrate the point I was trying to make in yesterday’s post about the value of “micro-short-tails”* and came up with this:
Theoretically, the bars on the map represent three products sold on a website. They vary in popularity with Product A being more popular in terms of both traffic (and revenue, in this case) than Product B or C. The horizontal access represents search terms, so the left side of the graph shows that some terms drive a lot more traffic than terms further to the right. A typical hockey stick style graph (this is based on real data).

We caught the eco-conscious Bamba chair at the Brooklyn Design fair recently and it caught our eye as it’s an interesting example of how eco-consciousness can make a better product for us and the plaent. It comes in bamboo plywood or palm plywood and 100% aluminum which can be simply recycled. The cushion is natural talalay latex and the upholstery is natural and biodegrade. What’s fascinating is that the seat, back and arms are cut from the sides that support the chair and just snap together. The makers, EcoSystems, says that this approach nearly eliminates production waste for the structure of the chair and minimizing both the material needed and the size of the package for shipping.

It’s a good problem to have, right?
Well, not always.
Last week I pointed you all to Mike Stelzner’s video about making money with white papers. White papers are educational documents that contain “under the radar” persuasive elements that lead people to buy stuff, and Mike is a master at them.
There’s a lot of money in white papers… both for freelance writers and for small business owners. So the idea was that Mike would give out a lot of great free content about his background as a freelance white paper writer, and then offer a training course to a select group of people who wanted to know the insider secrets to writing and marketing white papers.

Ahhh. The time killing game of beer pong. For those of you who have never played beer pong (or have so severely lost that you no longer remember playing), this is truly a game of whit and fortitude.
All you need to play is a ping pong ball, plenty of beer, and a few cups. Team up, take turns throwing the ping pong ball at your opponents cups (filled with beer of course), and every time you land in the cup the opposing team drinks the beer.

by: Alex EperjessyThe title comes from the excellent Harvard Business Review article, Leadership’s Online Labs. The article gives an in-depth view of the similarities between leadership in business and in games. While this is not the first time the subject is approached, the HBR article gives it the treatment it needs. And of course, gives the theory some weight…
