Posted by Jane CoplandI don’t often get indignant about websites. Even bad ones. Sometimes I complain about what passes for Web 2.0 genius, but I have a problem with one particular site I’ve come across lately. I find Spock.com vaguely appalling.
Spock is a social networking / people search site which allows anyone to edit anybody else’s information. If you find that you’ve been added to the site, you can claim your profile and change your information. However, there is no guarantee that you’ll notice you’ve been added to the site. I only realised I’d been listed there when I received an email, alerting me to the fact that I had a profile there.

In the beginning, choice was not a problem. When our earliest ancestor wondered "What’s for dinner?" the answer wasn’t very complicated. It was whatever animal in the neighborhood he could run down, kill, and drag back to the cave. Today you walk into a cavernous supermarket and gaze out over a sea of different types and cuts of meats that someone else has run down, killed, dressed, and packaged for you.

As the competition in search becomes more sophisticated refining tactics becomes more important than ever. For online retailers, bidding by margin is all but essential.
Every firm has a different marketing objective: some look for maximum ROI, some are willing to spend to break even in hopes that future orders will drive the profit, others see search as a means of spreading the brand message.

Heya, adgrunts.
It used to be that y’all hated banner as more than life itself. You told me so more than thrice.
It used to be pretty cool to just log in and not see them. It used to be that everyone reckoned it was a good idea to support a service with a coin or three to help it survive.
Now I wonder if things haven’t changed. Would you think it was cool to watch ads (as in, the collected commercials of the 42000 strong commercial archive) for FREE, if only there was a twenty second ad that you didn’t ask for, that you h…

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on
Search Engine Land and from other
places across the web

10 Steps for Digg Success When You’re the Villain If you’re using Digg as a linkbaiting tool then you’re perceived as a villain. Everyone from Digg itself, to the community, to other self-proclaimed social media experts thinks you’re the bad guy. Today I had Comcast’s new DOCSIS 3.0 Business Class service installed at a home with 5 static IPs. The install went fairly smoothly (we had a bit of a scare in thinking we couldn’t get over 2Mbps but it all worked out in the end.) The nice thing about Business Class is that you get a Cisco 1800 series router, but the strange thing is that they still use the Scientific Atlanta router too (why not just use the 1800?)..
