What is a #1 Google Ranking Worth?

Aaron Wall wrote an interesting article the other day about the value of a Google ranking. As we already know being number 1 on Google can drastically affect your business, but the question is, what is it worth? According to the data that AOL released a while back the number 10 listing gets 14x less clicks than the number 1 listing. And to go one step further 89% of the clicks that users make when searching, happen to be on page 1.

Powerset Launches "Understanding Engine" For Wikipedia Content

After nearly two years in the making — and plenty of hype —
Powerset has
finally rolled out a "natural language" search engine. It’s not a Google killer.
It’s barely a business model right now. But at least it’s something the world
can finally play with, and under the hood, there’s lots of potential.
By the time you read this, the Powerset site should have changed into a tool
that allows you search
against material within Wikipedia. Why bother using Powerset rather than using Wikipedia’s own search tool or even Google
s…

Marketers; Are You Charging Your Clients Enough?

By Michelle Greer.
You have broken down creating keywords and negative keywords to a science. You have your clients running a full throttle social media campaign, complete with Facebook group, Twitter followers, blog, et al. They are now enjoying more exposure and tangible results than they ever did before. If you don’t know how to properly sell this value to your clients, you could be losing money and not even know it.

Brand Name Overload

Twenty-eight years ago, in a book entitled Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, I wrote: “The single most important marketing decision you can make is what to name the product.”

By now, the world seems to agree.

A booklet from Johnson & Johnson says: “Our company’s name and trademarks are by far our most valuable assets.”

The former chairman of Quaker Oats says: “If this business were to be split up, I would be glad to take the brands, trademarks and goodwill, and you could have all the bricks and mortar–and I would fare better than you.”

Whispers

Picture_313

Walking by the train tracks on my way to work one day, I noticed a tiny tree sprouting from the rocks alongside the tracks.  Headphones on, and power walk in place, I saw it—but really didn’t "see" it.  But a "whisper" told me to stop.  So I did.  Taking off my headphones, I knelt down and took this picture.  The whisper said "there’s something here.  something to think about… How can tree grow in a place like this?".

Keep Your Content Fresh! Including Comments

I haven’t ever done a ‘head to head’ comparison of a blog post written with a date and one without a displayed date. Over at DoshDosh, I noticed that they have dates on comments, but the date is no where to be found in the post itself. I believe this is a better approach than my blog, where I have the date very evident in both the URL and with a date graphic. I just can’t turn the clock back now without doing a lot of work!

BusinessWeek Forays Into Social Media Signal Publishing’s Future

baker.pngI’ve cancelled most of my print subscriptions because I so rarely read anything in them that I haven’t already read online. One sub I’ve continued is BusinessWeek because they tend to have deep coverage of stories I care about, and they’re trying harder than Fortune, Forbes, etc. to truly involve readers in co-creation of content.

This week, for example, S…

Does "Query Deserves Diversity" Algorithm Exist at Google?

Posted by randfishMost of us in the search space are familiar with the principles of the "query deserves freshness" (QDF) algorithm at Google, but this is almost certainly not the only intent detection process and algo-tweaking area the engine applies. One popular theory that gets inspires a good bit of discussion around the SEO water cooler is that Google may recognize queries with the potential for multiple intents and attempt to modify the search results to include more than just those pages that would normally rank (based on their standard algorithm).

Social Media: Where have we been, where are we going?

I’ve always enjoyed studying history and seeing how events unfolded, as well as the telltale signs that told us what was coming next. Of course in hindsight, we can see how certain forces were at work to create the future, but rarely can we see and understand the significance of the events as they are happening. As with anything else, it’s the same with the varying social media tools that have risen to, and sometimes fallen from, grace….

Link Lust: Don’t link me now, cuz’ I’m having a good time.

It’s really weird getting “embargoed” submissions set to be released at a certain date that is already appearing on other adblogs. So I reckon I’ll just point to the CULTIVATOR Advertising & Design campaign for New Belgium Brewing Co. at the Denver Egotist.

HP Advanced Photo Paper "Ripped Exit" - ambient/outdoor

When I first saw this I swear I let a little “How the f… did they do that?” and so, for once, the little photos showing how it’s was done were necessary. Now all I want to know is where the heck they’ve been hiding those swiss alps looking quaint towns in Malaysia. This clever little “exit” standee thing seems to have gone on a world tour. Jammy bastard.

One Show Student winners on "Doritos" live brief.

The print category received 376 entries. A Gold Pencil was awarded to art director/writer duo Elliot Nordstrom and Phil Van Buren of the University of Colorado for their campaign titled “There is Only One” which artfully featured the unique Doritos chip as the standout in a sea of generic potatoes chips, tortilla chips and crackers.
Other highlights of the show include a Gold Pencil awarded in the Interactive category to art director Thomas Jonsson and writer Cark Fredrik Jannerfeldt of Berghs School of Communication, Stockholm for “We don’t like banners,” an innovative computer plug-in program that would detect where advertising banners are placed and override them with your own personalized content. The tag line reads: “What if the Internet was just like a bag of Doritos. Filled only with the stuff you like.”

The youtube clip that needed to save "What happens in Vegas"

The footage of Cameron Diaz, drunk getting hitched to an equally soused Ashton Kutcher was “leaked” on the web to help boost interested in the movie “What happens in Vegas” which opened May 9. Adage reported:
those surveyed were asked for their top three choices of movies to see this summer, only 13% of Marketcast respondents named “What Happens in Vegas.” Instead, most mentioned blockbusters such as “Indiana Jones” (May 22) or “Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” (May 16). In short, when a film is tracking behind pictures that don’t even open until two to three weeks after it does, the studio releasing it has a potentially significant problem.

“How do you keep yourself motivated, when your blog is not attracting much traffic.”
Staying motivated is a massive issue for bloggers. Without it a blog really suffers.
