Nine years ago, when I knew I was going to become CEO of this company, I spent three days with its legendary founder, David Ogilvy, at his château in France. It was March, it was cold and rainy, and we spent the entire time indoors talking about the business. At one point I asked him a question point-blank: David, if you were going to say one thing to me, what would it be? He didn’t hesitate in his response. No matter how much time you spend thinking about, worrying about, focusing on, questioning the value of, and evaluating people, it won’t be enough, he said. People are the only thing that matters, and the only thing you should think about, because when that part is right, everything else works.

This week, the idea of a black list to stop PR agencies from spamming bloggers and journalists reared its not terribly attractive head, this time from Gina Trapani of Lifehacker who published a list of domains that had sent unsolicited email to her personal email address. In the not distant past, we had the same invocation from C…

Since Mothers day (USA) is rapidly approaching we thought we’d ask advertisings foremost expert on Mothers, Mother New York, a few questions about their dear moms.
All little children and by extension, creative grownups stem from somewhere, right? Yes that’s right, all come from mom.
Most creative gift you’ve given your Mum?
Krystle Loyland: “Breakfast in bed when I was 7 years old. I made the bowl of cereal first, then prepared the rest. She woke up to a soggy bowl of Total, juice, milk and a can of fruit with the can opener sitting next to it.”

Our clients utilize PCAnywhere for their support issues. I’m running Vista - so when I tried to load our licensed client, I was swiftly met with an incompatibility message and the installer quit.
In visiting the Symantec site, they of course fixed the compatibility issue with an upgrade to version 12.1. The snag? You have to pay $100 for the upgrade. I have to have it, so I paid the $100. Paying $100 for an application to simply work after you paid the initial licensing before is really enough to make you angry.

Yesterday MySpace announced that you can use your MySpace profile on other sites. Not to be outdone, today Facebook announced their version. It’s called Facebook Connect and it’s a good sign that data portability is catching on. Especially because Facebook usually doesn’t follow suit when it comes to sharing data (unless it’s for advertising).

No points were awarded yesterday. Ten brownie points today for the person who can correctly identify this quotation without resorting to a search engine: [She] “doesn’t know anything about love, or kindness, or the joy of helping others. You know, sometimes I don’t think she’s really very happy.”
I don’t think this is part of the original partnership: Y…

Are display ads in the future for Google Image Search SERPs?
Marissa Mayer talked to Bloomberg Radio earlier this week and she didn’t deny the possibility:
We haven’t found a proper way to monetize image search to date. You may see us roll out an ads-image search in the future, but when we do you’ll know that’s because we found a way that ultimately enhances user happiness with the product.

Imagine TiVo on steroids combined with a search engine like Google. It exists today but for the enterprise market. That product is called SnapStream TV and it allows thousands of hours of programming to be recorded – up to 10 shows simultaneously – and then, using closed caption transcripts, brings keyword search and related capabilities to any content element in that recorded programming.

Today there was a little excitement in the Rowse House.
On returning from a morning out there was a parcel sitting on our doorstep. On opening it I found:
It’s been fun to watch many of you ordering, receiving and even reviewing the ProBlogger book - but it’s a very strange feeling to hold it in your hands after all this time of working on it.

I’ve wanted tell you about TinEye for a few days now, but I’ve been swamped this week.
Then I figured out you’d probably prefer to see the demo by Amber Mack anyway.
Don’t want to watch the video. Here’s the elevator pitch:
TinEye uses image identification technology. You give it an image to search for and TinEye shows you where and how that image appears all over the web - even if it has been altered. The technology behind TinEye is Idée’s advanced image identification algorithms that identify images without the use of any meta-data or watermarks. TinEye literally does for images what Google does for text.
