Evaluating Advertising Effectiveness

When evaluating the potential effectiveness of different campaign ideas, I use the following questions:

•    Does the ad clearly identify your brand?  Does it do so immediately and throughout the ad?•    Does the ad clearly and forcefully communicate your brand’s unique promise?•    Does the ad feature a tag line that reinforces the brand’s promise??…

A Mother of a Day: Mom bloggers on the Today Show and a bad-pitch-apalooza

What a day!
It started with the C-string on the Today Show — that’s the team after Matt and Meredith, after Al and Ann, which apparently now features Kathie Lee Gifford along with Hoda Kotb. This is where Today decided to effectively bury its taped segment with mom bloggers Jill Asher, K…

Walk Like a Man

Vivo_BarefootWe were struck by this New York Magazine article last week that more or less chided all of humankind for its addiction to unnatural footwear in recent centuries. From the article, we learned that shoes compromise the natural structure of our feet, so that we pound too hard on our heels and aren’t able to roll our toes off the ground like we’re supposed to. While this particular PSFK contributor is quite a bit more comfortable in 4-inch heels than in slippers, that might just be an anomaly: barefoot is indeed better.

Why Don’t We Read (and How Much Do We Read) on the Web?

Posted by randfishThis short post looks at a Jakob Nielsen alertbox column entitled, How Little Do Users Read? Why a short post? Well, it would appear that we don’t read long posts, so why bother?

Blue Is The New Green

rather cheesy pic of glass of water on waterWithin the sustainability arena, energy use and carbon emissions have been in the spotlight for a long time, however the next big trend to hit the agenda is an increasing focus on water. Already most companies’ CSR reports will have a section pointing to their policies or stance on water issues, but in the future you will rarely be able to open your newspaper without seeing some reference to water matters.

Has Twitter Improved The Blogs?

Rather than supersede the blogosphere, has the Twitter social messaging system actually improved it?
On our daily review of blogs we read, we’ve seen the average number of posts per blog reduce but the quality improve tremendously. What seems to have happened is that Twitter has taken many of the personal updates (e.g.: I’m on a plane, at a conference, thinking this, falling over there) off the blogs. Therefore, while we’ve noticed ‘diarist’ bloggers switch platforms, the ’subject-matter’ bloggers seem to have been able to remove their random social commentary from their blogs and left them clearer, cleaner and more useful.

I want to speak like Steve Jobs

I  am invited to speak/share a nugget or two at 15-20 national conferences and conventions a year.  I get high marks and am invited back, so I must hold my own.

But I aspire to inspire like Steve Jobs.  He can bring a crowd to tears and cheers as he holds up the hottest new iPod, laptop or gadget.  I want to hold a crowd in my hand like that.

If you’re like me or you just want to improve your sales presentation skills, check out this video from B…

SearchCap: The Day In Search, May 7, 2008

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on
Search Engine Land and from other

From Search Engine Land:

The Big List Of Major B2B Search Engines Most search marketers focus on Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. But B2B search marketers also have a growing number of vertical search options. Clicks and leads from these vertical search sites may not yield the same traffic as general search engines, but the percentage of qualified traffic and conversions can…

Kiss anyone?

Mentos has a new interactive site called mentoskisscam that allows users to be kissed online by a sexy female or male model. It requires that the user has a webcam, but who hasn’t got one these days? I guess you could call it a guerrilla marketing spin of sorts on second life….

Following Paths vs Leaving Trails

Over the weekend I heard the following quote from poet David Perkins.
“Do not follow where the path leads, Rather go where there is no path, and leave a trail.”

I’ve not been able to get it out of my head since. I shared it last night on Twitter and half a dozen people replied quickly that it’d impacted them quite a lot so I thought I’d share it again here on ProBlogger.
