Sorry Marketers, You Can’t Go Up

Zale’s, the king of middle-market jewelry, tried to sell more expensive jewelry. They had little success.

Wrangler, a brand that sells $15 dollar jeans at Wal-Mart, tried to sell $190 jeans at Barney’s. They had little success.

Wal-Mart launched a marketing effort to sell more higher-priced merchandise as a way to get business from Target. They will have little success.

What these companies fail to understand is that it is exceptionally difficult to take a well-established brand up in price or value. The automobile people have a long history of failure in this regard.

A Game of He said, Yang Said

The New York Times reported today that in an interview, Yahoo’s CEO and co-founder, Jerry Yang, claimed that Microsoft pulled it’s bid for his company after Yahoo counter offered the software giants previous bid.
This is in direct contrast to claims by Steve Ballmer and Microsoft’s advisers, that stated that the bid was pulled due to Yahoo’s unwillingness to counter, and Mr. Yang and his board’s decision to settle on a price of $37 a share their ultimate refusal to budge.

Crave the Early Days of Google? Join Facebook

Another Google exec has decided to leave Google to join Facebook. This time it’s Elliot Schrage, vp of global communications and public affairs. He’ll become the vp of communications and public policy at Facebook. He was at Google for two years.
The funny part is how quickly he got on Facebook and started sharing the news. Like the COO hire, this is a strategic hire for Facebook as they try to follow in Google’s stock price footsteps. If enough early stage Google employees go to Facebook they just might be able to recreate that early Google startup feel.

Delta’s Innovative Airplane Seats

Delta to install “Cozy Suite”, better designed coach seating
Delta are introducing a new design for their international coach seating, scheduled to roll out in 2010. The staggered design, called “Cozy Suite” adds 2 inches of extra leg room and makes it easier for the window passengers to get to the aisle (without trampling all over your neighbors). The addition of the wrap around head rest also provides a much needed alternative to the nearest stranger’s shoulder.

Creative Index
Behance has introduced Creative Index as a site for creative professionals to find work, connect with each other and share portfolios. The free profiles are pretty easy to set up and the interface makes searching simple. We like that the site’s definition of creative professional is very inclusive; categories ranging from advertising, graphic design, illustration to acrobatics, costume design and ice sculpture can be found on the site.
