Is Brand Positioning Still Relevant?

M. Anand from Businessworld, India’s leading business publication interviewed me in 2005 on the relevance of positioning in a changing world. Here’s the conversation that transpired…

•   Is positioning still relevant 35 years after you first wrote about it?

It is more relevant now. The original body of work on positioning was made on the premise that the United States was an over-communicated market. There was too much noise and lots of competition for the mind. The mind was the battleground. Then, the question was how do we get into the consumers’ mind in an over-communicated society. Little did we know that it is going to become an even more over-communicated world. In fact, we thought over-communicated was nothing. Now, you have the Internet, satellites etc.. All that has made positioning an even bigger deal. That is why the book continues to sell even now.

eBay partners with Buy.com, gives large sellers the finger

Hi gang,
It’s being widely reported this weekend that eBay has entered into a partnership with Buy.com to allow Buy.com to sell lots and lots of product on eBay.com.   As of this moment,  Buy.com has over 140,000 3-day listings active on the site.  In April Buy.com did roughly $700,000 in sales on eBay.
None of the matters to me.
What matters to me is that eBay, for the first time,  has cut a deal on listing/final value fees for a seller.    That’s right gang - eBay is finally behaving like every other company on Earth.   Companies that sell more product pay less for fees - what a concept!

Steve Ballmer’s Email to Microsoft Employees

Techcrunch.com has released an email sent by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to Microsoft employees:
This afternoon I sent the attached letter to Jerry Yang announcing that Microsoft has withdrawn its proposal to acquire Yahoo. We proposed the deal in the belief that a Microsoft-Yahoo merger would create a combined company with the resources and assets to win in the fast-growing market for advertising and online services….

Microsoft Retreats or Withdrawls, Depends on Your View

This is a strange, and somewhat unexpected turn of events in the ongoing Microhoo saga.

Microsoft To Pull Its Offer For Yahoo

Microsoft has decided to withdraw its offer for Yahoo and not pursue a hostile takeover bid, according to a letter from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, just released: “Clearly a deal is not to be.”

This marks a totally amazing turn in the drama of Microsoft’s effort to takeover Yahoo. When the bid was announced in February, it was discussed by Microsoft’s executives as though concluding the deal was only a matter of formality. It’s not entirely clear if this marks the end of the whole episode but it certainly appears to (at least on the surface.)

Are our words fading away?

Erase
There a roughly a zillion blogs and about a bazillion blog posts (these are approximations).  Those posts use a gazillion and a half words.  Every day.

Think of the words that seem to crop up everywhere.  Transparency, conversation, consumer generated, authentic, engaged, empower.  We could go on and on.

What’s on page 123?

Director Tom recently tagged me in an interesting meme where you share what you’re reading now and what you’ll be reading next. Also, you share the 6th through 8th sentences on page 123.So here’s the passage of Groundswell, the book I am currently reading:”It’s always cheaper to sponsor such a site than to try to build your own, although you give up control. The key is, P&G defined a community around an issue that attracts girls’ attention - the problem of growing up. Another generic girl community would have ended up competing with - and losing to - Piczo, Barbie Girls, or other popular sites for young girls.”…

Wii WOM

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an interview with Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo EVP of Sales & Marketing. The interview focused on the marketing strategies behind the U.S. introduction of Wii Fit, a gaming system designed to get people in game shape.

Cammie Dunaway explains there will be TV, Radio, and OOH advertising to support the launch but … Nintendo is focusing much of its marketing attention on “public relations” efforts to get regular people to do the marketing for Wii Fit.

The coming backlash over green marketing

Go_green/img>
Micah points us to this campaign from Tumi Luggage. Buy some nylon luggage, they’ll plant some trees (one tree? A bush? It’s not clear how many trees per suitcase). It’s entirely possible that Tumi’s campaign is nothing short of generous, but as a consumer, it’s awfully difficult to tell.
