by: Scott GoodsonAnthropologists will tell you that small human behaviors are the key to understanding a society. Where will our society go with all this new technology in the hands of millions and millions and millions of people worldwide? On my way up to the StrawberryFrog’s penthouse today on Madison ave, I noticed something that, at least in my mind, gives us a clue.

I have just started working with a new client in London and we have just completed the Day One briefing. This is the moment after all the non-disclosure agreements have been signed when you get a full and frank overview of the company, its brands and strategies. My client is in awesome shape. It has five key brands and I spent the day learning about each from its respective brand manager.
As I learned about them and the opportunities ahead I got more excited - until we got to the final brand. It was projected to generate healthy sales in 2008, but the more I poked, the more I started to think that, unlike its sister brands, this one should be shut down. It had limited growth options and was in a very tough category. For an hour I argued that this brand should be killed.

How’s your customer service? If it’s bad, you’re probably not very successful. It means… everything to your business… and your brand.
This video talks about my views on how good customer service is essential to your success. And I’m not just talking about “customers who buy stuff”. You may not sell anything. How you deal with people who read your blog, or who watch your videos, or who interact with your brand in any way… those are customers. Believe it. Everyone you interact with is your customer. You are always selling, indirect or direct.

In an article published this week, The Guardian tells us that in an average person’s lifetime, he or she will spend 36 total years sitting down. As humans, though, we didn’t evolve to be sitting creatures, so our bodies aren’t adapted to that lifestyle. Good posture is one way to minimize the health problems of sitting all day long, but if you follow all the rules, you’d be sitting “with a 110-degree angle between your legs and spine, with your bottom pushed well into the back of the seat and your back, legs and bottom in contact with the chair.” Awkward.

The goal of any brand positioning exercise is to develop a brand promise that is unique, compelling and believable. Any successful brand positioning project must evaluate all potential brand promises against these three criteria – unique, compelling and believable. The winning promise must deliver against all three criteria or it won’t work. The only way to assess this is to measure each of these for each brand promise option with each key target audience.
