Google’s
rolled out a new tool at Google
Webmaster Central, a robots.txt generator. It’s designed to allow site
owners to easily create a robots.txt file, one of the two main ways (along with
the meta robots tag)
to prevent search engines from indexing content. Robots.txt generators aren’t
new. You can find many of them out there by searching. But this is the first
time a major search engine has provided a generator tool of its own.

While I am presently an offline/online media relations guy, my background spans a variety of media and tactics. As such, I have always been fascinated with the phenomena of SuperBowl advertisements. What other event allows you to generate buzz simply by making a media buy?

A big part of my responsibilities at TopRank involve the wonderful world of social media. As with search marketing, there is both an “organic” and an advertising component to marketing on social networks, news and media sharing sites.
As social media usage increases month over month, marketers have found a way to use these popular sites as channels for promotion. Anyone can join the PINK Victoria’s Secret group on Facebook and receive messages of a new sale or a new product line hitting the shelves in the upcoming weeks. Companies have been using MySpace for years to create custom pages for their promotion and making friends with current and potential customers in and around their target demographic.

Walter Dean Myers’ latest book, Game is a tender sports story about the fragile line between winning and losing. Not only are there negative influences on the street, Drew’s own self-doubt often challenges him. He is a talented, superstar basketball player but must first learn to play for the team before he can truly have “game.”

The fame game is now being used by at least one small liberal arts college as way to close the deal with undecided high school seniors. According to this article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Wilkes University has invested money (over $200K) in a quirky campaign to get admitted students to say yes. Here’s how it works:

Not literally, of course, but when it comes to leadership and how young people are consuming news, i.e. who has the authority, this wired generation prefers peer-to-peer vs. a top down style — if you connect the themes of two interesting stories in The Washington Post and New York Times.
The first story is about leadership. The Girl Scouts did a national survey of youth and found found that the majority of boys and girls in the United States “have little or no interest with achieving leadership roles when they become adults, ranking ‘being a leader’ behind other goals such as ‘fitting in,’ ‘making a lot of money’ and ‘helping animals or the environment.’” What’s fascinating about this survey is the disconnect between how leadership is defined (people who prize collaboration, stand up for their beliefs and values, and try to improve society) vs. the style of leadership they actually see in the world (traditional top-down management).

One of the biggest challenges for startups is keeping in the public eye - getting the word out on a consistent basis to drive an audience, customers, buzz, etc. There are lots of marketing techniques for startups but one that I think is under used and under appreciated is PR.

Ogilvy & Mather, Mumbai went to the classified ads section to allow a teeny-weensy bit of creativity on their tiny budget. But honestly, since Photolibrary wanted to generate awareness amongst media professionals, they should have gotten a proper budget as one wonders how many media professionals scour the classified ads for stock photography.

Put a couple of tablespoons of fuel in your car’s tank today, and see what happens to the car.
I’ll tell you what happens.
It’ll probably take you a few inches further down the road.
And you’ll say to yourself: “What the heck? What difference will a few inches make?”

The video below is all about getting attention to create opportunity, or revenue, or whatever it is that you’re looking to do. It’s a story about how I used a stack of yellow post-it notes to get offered a job. You should appreciate the middle part of this video where I post the notes all over my face for comedy effect.
The point is… you can get a lot in this world if you can get someone’s attention. Anyone can do it. You just have to n…

Great stuff, we need a US version of this because even the product shot of herring bits in sauce looked nasty a href=http://feeds.futurelab.net/~r/Futurelab/~3/258999499/advertising_vs_reality.html>Original Source: feeds.futurelab.net

Gaaaaaawd, Fedex sucks. Somewhere in Europe someone decided to use Fedex to send us their reel(s), which is great and normally we simply get a package (usually by post rather than fedex), open it, convert it and post the films on the sites. Ta-dah!
When we moved our office, we moved to a place where the door to the street is locked (not uncommon), thus Fedex needs to either a) call us, b) know the code for the door or c) hang the package on the door (which is not done for obvious reasons). So, back then we went through the trouble of faxing, mailing a…

One way to add depth to the posts that you write on your blog is to include the opinions of others on the topics that you’re exploring. The way that I see it is that when I write a post with just my own thoughts in it it can end up being a little one dimensional - but when I draw upon the experience of others also posts have the potential to become 2… or even 3 dimensional.
How do I do it?
Here are five ways that I’ve used lately to include the opinion of others in my posts:

Clemenger BBDO Melbourne says:
For Melbourne’s homeless, life is a struggle; it’s the little things like getting a decent meal that can be the most challenging. Clemenger BBDO Melbourne’s task was to raise awareness for Father Bob’s Foundation and their service of providing food for the homeless. Our solution was to create three ambient stickers; A knife, a fork and a call to action. The stickers were strategically placed on bin tops around the city. The knife and fork sat either side of the bin opening to give the impression that the hole was a plate. The stickers proved quite confronting and forced people to recognise that the homeless need their help….
