"social gestures beget social objects"

When I was last in San Francisco a few weeks ago, my good friend, Shel Israel interviewed me, as part of his new FastCompany.com gig. We talked about “Social Objects”, with a heavy emphasis on “Social Markers”. It was a fun time. Thanks for the opportunity, Shel!…

D?ar Art dir?ctors, pl?ase quit using "sigma" instead of e.

Oh no, not again, like we didn’t see enough of this “clever” Greek flavour when the movie “My Big Fat GR??K Wedding” came out. Few things annoy me as much as faux greek, but faux cyrillic and heavy metal bands idiot use of cool “umlauts” are right up there with it. Us arty folks already have a bit of an idiot reputation, what with some “silly art school” behind us where no “real subjects” were studied, and lets not forget that the clients nephew has a mac so he can probably “whip something up”. Do not cement our reputation as fools with stuff like this, please. They’ll let copywriters get away with calling calling a chimpanzee a “monkey”, but that’s because they don’t know any better themselves. (Here’s a trick for you who don’t know the difference between an ape and a monkey, monkeys h…

Twinsaver Toilet Tissue - The Unmentionables Song - :90 South Africa

TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris, Johannesburg decided togo all out when advertising Twinsaver Toilet Tissue - they wrote a whole song about it. I wish we’d got more submissions of radio ads if they are all this catchy.

Dunkelziffer - Haunting creep - (2008) :30 (Germany)

This disturbing depiction of trauma will haunt you for the rest of the day, quite apt since Red Rabbit Hamburg wants you to realize that the consequences and stigma of sexual abuse stay with you until the grave. Nicely directed by The Vikings.

"Dear John" letter generator for Ad agencies

Citrus have created this dear agency letter generator. You choose between three different things, such as monkeys, lizards or meerkats in response to the question “What animals have been suggested that “really take your brand to the next level”?” and click write letter to get a nice letter that you can send off to your agency when you want them to know you’re letting them go. My only gripe with this is no matter what animal I pick that particular creature isn’t mentioned in the letter, though the others might be. Fail.

Rumormill - Microsoft responds to Mac vs. PC ads with Jackass?

Over at a blog called Cajunboy there’s an email from a guy who was in a focusgroup which he deducted was for Microsoft. Seems they might be testing out a new hero for their next ad campaign… Namely Johnny Knoxville a.k.a that Jackass guy.
But what struck me as the funniest thing out of all of this was that it appears as though Johnny Knoxville might be their answer to Justin Long. We were shown some marketing material featuring Knoxville, including one commercial in which he falls and drops his PC in Jackass type stunt, but then a “don’t worry about losing your data if your computer becomes destroyed because you’re a jackass because the new Windows automatically backs up to files for you” message was delivered. …

The Philosophy of Marketing

The marketing concept is a philosophy. It makes the customer, and the satisfaction of his or her needs, the focal point of all business activities. It is driven by senior managers, passionate about delighting their customers.

Marketing is not only much broader than selling, it is not a specialized activity at all It encompasses the entire business. It is the whole business seen from the point of view of the final result, that is, from the customer’s point of view. Concern and responsibility for marketing must therefore permeate all areas of the enterprise.
