Great scenes from TV an cinema told using only typography

Hey adgrunts. I was busy today, wallpapering my bedroom in fact, so the glittering gold walls in there are the reason I did not update today. And likely the reason for future nightmares, holy cow is it ever gold. Fit to be a King Midas bedroom.
So here’s my friday treat for those of you not busy getting drunk for easter, the Jewish festival of Purim, or partying down for the Persian new year of Narouz; or if you are Sunni celebrating Eid Milad an Nabi which the birth of the Prophet; or digging the Small Holi for Hindus. (…

What’s In A Website Or App Name? A Lot.

Honesty BoxI’ve been thinking a lot about anonymity lately because it is a key aspect to the application we’re working on to offer youth portable support and resources online. Like technology itself, the possibility of posting anonymously can be used for good or bad or something in between. The good is the opportunity to share your secrets, and by typing them and receiving feedback that others share those same experiences, realizing that you’re not alone. The bad is the ability to bully online without being accountable for your words or actions.

Is There A Place For The "N" Word In Children’s Literature?

The land.jpegAccording to the Tampa Tribune, an angry dad is trying to get two books removed form his daughter’s 5th grade reading list. The books use the “N” word, and although it is placed in a meaningful historical context and as a way to deliver the weight of an ugly period in American History, he still feels it’s inappropriate.

Using Contests as an Alternative Tracking Method

Last time I explained the pros and cons of using images in
your email messages. Including high-quality images can have a dramatic effect
on the way customers perceive your business, but they need to be used
conservatively, as most email clients will block them from displaying unless

When Free Isn’t Cheap Enough

Farhad Manjoo has put together an outline of how you can access the online version of the Wall Street Journal without a paid subscription.

As Manjoo explains, the WSJ allows public access to paid content when visitors arrive through Google News or Digg. Using a Firefox plugin, you can spoof the referral the WSJ sees and thus gain access to the entire site.

This makes me wonder, “I can do that, but is it worth it?” Or, put another way, is free cheap enough?

The bad table

I saw a marketing dilemma at the hot new restaurant I went to the other night.

We got there on time at 6:30 and the restaurant was about a third full. We were promptly seated at the worst table in the place, in the back, in the corner, cramped by the kitchen.

We were first-time patrons, having secured a reservation via Open Table. That made us doubly second-class citizens, I guess.

We asked for a better table, pointing to one a few feet away. “Oh, I’m sorry, that one is reserved.”

Minds Think Alike - Perhaps Too Much!

by: Roger DooleyDid you ever wonder why some people have such insight into the behavior and feelings of others? Certainly, some of the great advertising execs, copywriters, and other pros seem to have it, particularly for certain groups or markets. But are these insights always accurate?

Lead Management Will Never Be The Same Again

by: Jon Miller$300 billion dollars a year. That’s what the 3,000 largest B2B companies in the world spend annually on lead generation, resulting in billions of leads. Yet despite this massive expense, I have yet to find a sales executive who is happy with the number and quality of marketing generated leads.

Visual versus Verbal

Have you ever been asked which is more powerful, the eye or the ear? Probably not, because the answer is obvious. I’ll bet that deep down inside, you believe the eye is more powerful. Call it “visual chauvinism,” if you like, but it’s a preconception held by many marketing people.

I’ll bet, too, that you share a related preconception, first expressed some 500 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Confucius says: “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Give & You Shall Receive

We interrupt the Daily Flip to bring you a video you have to watch. Gary Vaynerchuk, the Wine guy, talks a little business/life strategy.
