A friend pointed me to some interesting videos showing the Clover Brewer in action. (Thanks Mr. Garraway.)
Turns out there is a coffee shop in Austin that uses one — J.P.’s Java. (I feel a field trip coming on.)
If you have no idea why I am blogging this, …

Ypulse reader Jay sent me some interesting research today from mtvU and the Associated Press (they interviewed over 2,000 18-24 year-old college students). Here are some of the highlights:
- 33 percent are feeling somewhat happy about their lives while 31 percent are very happy
- 70 percent said it matters more than usual who gets elected president this time around.
- 68 percent said the Iraq war was a mistake

A debate persists in the consulting industry about the role of methodologies and tools in the sales process.
Some argue that, once you utter a word about "how" you plan to do the work, the client begins to perceive you as a commodity, rather than an adviser. Others suggest, with equal vigor, that a consultant’s methods and tools are central to any sale.
In my opinion, both positions are right–and wrong.
Any experienced consultant will tell you that our business has few hard and fast rules. What works for one client doesn’t necessarily work for another. What we really need is flexibility, not dogma.

We recently acquired what might be the worst toaster in the history of the world. It’s pretty fancy and shiny and microprocessor controlled. And it makes toast.
But here’s what I have to do to use it:
Choose the number of slices, and bagel or bread.
Remember whether it counts the slices from the left or the right (the left).
Insert the bread.
Push down the handle.
Choose toast or defrost.

This post is not about you, or is it? I filmed this video (below) because I know what I’m talking about. I’ve been there. I’ve been too scared to try new marketing tactics. Too scared to start new businesses. In general, too scared to win and be successful. But I got over it.
When you’re scared to win, you fail. If you take anything away from what I say in this video, I hope it’s that you realize that failure is going to happen. It happens to everyone. You will fail. Big f-ing deal. Everyone does. Just learn from it and try again. You will never, ever be successful until you give up on your fear of failure. I hope this video inspires you. Please leave a comment below.

The Bessies have been separating the good tv from the bad since 1973 - and to promote the 2008 award show, they show you how the judges do it. Kind of. Ad agency John St, Toronto.

Lowe Bangkok give us this graphic - without being “graphic”, geddit? - treatment for Pepper Spray. Now here’s a product I never thought I’d see advertised with shiny double-pages spreads. Heck, when I invested in my first imported (seriously illegal) pepper spray many moons ago, the packaging text was all I needed. On my mates French police spray it read “paralyse” and 10%, on my 16% it read “paralyse constant” - sold! And yes, I’ve even had to use it. Apologies to the now probably blind guy but I told you to leave me the hell alone three times yet you followed me into the graveyard at four in the morning - be glad you’re still breathing.

by: Dick StroudThe big six TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW and My Network TV) in the US are still bleeding viewers. This might be a result of the writer’s strike or a sign of a more fundamental shift in media habits.

Saatchi & Saatchi in Mumbai have cracked an Ariel brief with this very interesting, almost subliminal, execution. The tag “no stains, no memories” is illustrated by stains that tell you the story of how they came to be. In the lipstick stain, there’s scenes of love. Neat. Two other executions inside.

Sorry about the blackout folks, Adland’s server has moved from one physical location to another with the rest of the big machines hosted by Memset last night - and I forgot to put up a post to warn you that we’d be offline during the night (for us). Just as we were getting ready to move, US traffic decided to march on in, so I’m sure a few of you wondered where the heck the site went. No matter what time I’d choose someone would see a blank nothing instead of the site - but at least I had a good nights sleep. ;)…

There is a fine line separating too many brands from too few. If
companies are lazy with the brand shears they end up with the marketing
confusion and poor economies of brand exemplified by General Motors and
its overgrown brand architecture. In contrast, if firms are too
conservative with brand creation and acquisition, they end up with the
risk-averse culture and limited market penetration illustrated by Kodak.
The secret is to be somewhere in the
middle. The fewer the brands, the better, but you have to make sure
there are enough to target all the valuable segments in the market. So
it is always interesting when a savvy company such as Hyatt decides to
create a new brand. The hotel operator recently launched a hotel chain
named Andaz. Personally, I would have followed in GE Life’s footsteps
and named the brand ‘Tonight’. Alas, this time the Indians have
triumphed: the name means ‘personal style’ in Hindustani….
