Spring break. That annual pilgrimage to somewhere sunny for teens and college students that kind of resembles a drunken orgy. I never went to Cancun or Hawaii, but I did go to Panama City one year in high school for spring break. We called Panama City “The Redneck Riviera”…and believe me it was. Northern Florida is in many ways more southern than parts of the deep south. We mostly hung out on the beach, got too sunburned and drank/tried to meet boys at night. I never participated in any bikini or wet t-shirt contests, but I did go parasailing for the first time.

I tuned in for the second installment of WE’s “High School Confidential” last night, which followed Courtney and her younger sister, who became pregnant at 15. Given all of the hoopla over “Juno” and Jamie Lynne, I thought it was really interesting to watch the reality of one girl’s teen pregnancy — her mother is angry and disappointed. Her father forbids her to even consider having an abortion (they’re very Catholic), and her mother decides for her that she must give the baby up for adoption. They were ultimately supportive of their daughter through the pregnancy (where she admitted to being very depressed), but we watch Courtney express the painful reality that her sister will be thinking of her daughter every single day of her life. We also hear about the judgment and whispers from her sister’s friends. Very different from Diablo Cody’s indie fairy tale indeed.

Recently it seems that the conversation about social media among companies is becoming MUCH smarter. Before, it was like ‘we need to get into blogs, cause I saw the story in Business Week on them’. Now it seems that companies are beginning to understand that social media isn’t the golden egg, but instead it’s about using these tools to better reach and understand their customers. I had several conversations during and after SXSW with companies that drove home this point, but I love this quote from Michael Dell during a…

Ho-kay, those paying attention here know that I drive a Vespa, actually I’ve had Vespas since I was 17 years old. I’ll smile at any Vespa ad that comes along. Especially this on, cuz it’s so true. We love them because they’re ten inch wheel unsteady deathtraps. ;P Sexy ones at that. All you really can do is cruise from point A to point B on them and the clever front design keeps your sta-press pants perfectly crisp and the wind away from your knees. Love it.

Madonna’s first single from her new album debuted last night in a new Sunsilk hair products TV advert. I have nothing else to say about this, except the Sunsilk campaign has more money than brains….

Eva Longoria Parker who plays Gabrielle Solis on Desperate housewives may want to call a lawyer - or just close her eyes and pretend she never saw this.
Pipedream products (link totally NSFW!) has come up with a series of blow-up dolls themed around stars characters in TV shows and films - I don’t know if this is sheer genius or creepy as hell.

Techcrunch explains why Charlie Rose was sporting a huge black eye and sporting a bandage over part of his forehead while doing his show last night. No, he hasn’t been in a barfight - he tripped on a pothole while walking on 59th Street in Manhattan. At the time though, he was carrying his shiny new MacBook Air, so he had a decision to make, catch himself or the Macbook Air? He chose the Air.

by: Michael HoexterIn the last couple posts in this series, we’ve established that in industrial economies, price expectations for energy are low for fundamental economic reasons (mechanical work must displace human labor or animal work) but that in the US and Canada, these expectations are further depressed by low population densities, in many locations extreme ambient temperatures and temperature swings, and a preference for “big” vehicles and buildings.

I told you guys back in 2004 about Vilgot Sjöman & Claes Eriksson’s case against Channel 4 (sweden) that lead to Channel 4 being fined for interrupting these directors movies with commercials. Well, Channel 4 wasn’t going to let that slide so they’ve been dancing around in the courts ever since - and today Swedens Högsta Domstol (highest court) slapped the channel once more. In the judgment the courts say that TV4 (channel four) have “by abruptly breaking up the movies for commercials, violated both directors distinctive character in the movies ”Hajen som visste för mycket” and ”Alfred” according to swedish copyright law.”

EnbW is building the first geothermal power station in Germanys Baden-Württemberg, making the company a pioneer in this field. This idea, via agency Jung von Matt/Elbe, Hamburg, aims at making people aware of EnBW’s commitment. The concept is very simple; those gray traffic bollards were combined this sticker (to the left) on the ground: the result gave the impression of a giant highly realistic, three domensional electric plug. The kyootest giant whale terrorizing downtown Tokyo that you’ve ever seen. He even says
“please stop whaling” to that dude inside the Whale Research Institute building. Aw.
Plaza director Allan Moore explains: “I wanted to utilise the stylised cuteness that appeals to the young Japanese, presenting whales with the kindness and intelligence that all marine mammals are renowned for.”

So, according to Radar Online the “Mac guy”, aka Justin Long, is not returning for the next batch of Mac ads. Why? Well if you ask Slate, it’s because he’s a smug little twit.
Perhaps for striking people as a “smug little twit,” in the words of Seth Stevenson, ad critic for Slate. Long, he adds, is “just the sort of unshaven, hoodie-wearing, hands-in-pockets hipster we’ve always imagined when picturing a Mac enthusiast…. It’s like Apple is parodying its own image while also cementing it.” Of the polymathic Hodgman, who has drawn acclaim for his work on The Daily Show and NPR’s This American Life as well as his book, The Areas of My Expertise, Stevenson writes, “Even as he plays the chump in these Apple spots, his humor and likability are evident.”…

Watch video below to see the world premier of my new Daily Flip jingle!
I’ve always wanted a cheesy jingle. You know, like the ones you see on late night TV from the used car salesman in your town? Or the windows/garage door/plumber, etc…? You know what I’m talking about. They produce these seemingly low-quality, yet, extremely catchy jingles that they run on radio and TV over, and over, and over… Until it’s hammered into your brain. Hey, it works….
