Just over six months after it launched as a feature of Google Earth, Google Sky is spinning off into a separate web-based offering. The site, http://sky.google.com, is the internship project of a finalist in the Latin America Code Jam, Diego Gavinowich (with help from some others, of course). Today marks the o…

Just before Christmas, the groovy cats at Border TV made a half-hour documentary of my frequent partner-in-crime, Savile Row tailor, Thomas Mahon. [The full Google video page is here.]
Cumbria for me seems a long way away from Alpine, Texas at the moment. Nonetheless, seeing Thomas in his element [Take it from me- they did a really splendid job of capturing his schtick] made me feel so proud to be p…

I’m on a quest to simplify my media consumption by finding the best online sources for what I and my clients need to know.
Everyone I talk to tells that me he or she also is drowning in information. And every time you turn around there’s more yet news and information coming at you from what V…

Modernista! no longer has a site, just a clever way of redirecting the visitor, so they’re using what everyone else said about Modernista! on the web as their site instead of wasting time building their own. (Hmm, I wonder if this mention will make our site end up as part of Modernista!’s site… Time will tell). What do you think about that kids? Humble? Pretentious? Clever way of getting rid of their big old server and replacing it with someones iPhone? Kidding. Hat Tip B…

Last night a parent asked how technology was impacting teen reading. Alli has written about this before on Ypulse Books and there have been recent studies that show young people are reading less — or at least less books. We’ve also heard lots of talk about how the reliance on virtual communication is hurting social skills and that texting or IM lingo is creeping into teens’ schoolwork. I was thinking about this again in the context of blog post by Jaclyn over at The Schiff Report, which she posted in a comment the other day. Her post is in response to the coverage of Susan Jacoby’s treatise on how Americans have abandoned intellectualism for “junk thought.” I think I linked to another piece featuring her point of view in an Essentials round up awhile back. While Jacoby doesn’t specifically target Gen Y, Jaclyn feels it’s implied. From h…

Tip #1 — Converting docx files
Ok, so I have not upgraded to problem-prone Vista nor Office 2007 because I wanted to save myself major headaches.
However, some of my clients are sending me .docx files (Office 2007) — which I can’t open in Word 2003. To open these files, you need a .docx converter. […]…

Aloha!
There’s nothing quite like waking up in Hawaii, brewing some 100% Kona coffee, and then blogging from a lanai.
Then reality sets in and you realize you’re 6 hours behind the east coast and way behind on the day’s news. Never fear! I’ve also realized that when it’s 6pm here, many midnight EST embargos will be just lifting–so I’ll get a jump on most news items. …

As you’ve probably heard AOL today announced the acquisition of social networking site Bebo for $850 million.
Sure, we could discuss how this will help AOL turn AIM and ICQ into an uber-social network. We could also discuss how Yahoo and Google let this slip from their grasp. But, here’s the question I’d like to ask…

On the heels of completing their acquisition of DoubleClick this week, Google is releasing the beta version of Google Ad Manager. It’s a tool for advertisers to manage their ad campaigns. DoubleClick has similar services which Google will continue to support however they will not be free.
Essentially with this tool small businesses can optimize and manage their ad inventory and see how its performing. And it will display Google AdSense as a default for unsold ad space. It will track different types of advertising including: display, search, affiliate, rich media, and video advertising.

YouTube has opened new APIs to allow more innovative ways to enhance and interact with YouTube content. This includes ways to integrate YouTube videos onto other websites, create desktop applications, video games, mobile devices, televisions, cameras, and more.
In geekier terms:
“We now provide a complete set of (CRUD) capabilities for uploading, managing, searching, and playing back user videos and metadata from the YouTube “cloud,” managed by us. We do all of the hard work of transcoding and hosting and streaming and thumbnailing your videos, and we provide open access to our sizable global audience, enabling you to generate traffic for your site, visibility for your brand, or support for your cause.”…

I remember well, hearing all about two of my favorite writers, H…

What if I told you there was a way you could absolutely dominate your local niche and outrank your local competition? What if I told you this technique is very simple and inexpensive? Would you be interested? What would it be worth to you to dominate your local niche? If you dominated the Search Engine rankings for local niche keywords so that local people found your website with nearly any keyword or phrase they typed in, how much would that be worth to your business? Hundreds? Thousands?
