Posted by great scott!Hey Gang, welcome to a very special edition of Whiteboard Friday. Why is it special? A couple of reasons: First, Rand’s discussing one of his favorite topics, blogging, and second, we decided to get a little crazy this week…you’ll see what I mean when you watch the video.
Apart from the ridiculous theatrics, Rand discusses why it’s important for bloggers to try and make friends and influence people. The blogosphere is actually a very close approximation of t…

There are good surprises and then there are bad surprises.
On Saturday evening, my daughter and I were driving towards home when all of a sudden, my foot could not find the gas pedal. It was gone. I stomped and wiggled my foot all over the floor of my truck….but no gas pedal.

Since so many people liked the merry-go-round water pump idea, I thought I’d mention another one: Milk banking. Yes, it’s what it sounds like: Women give milk to a milk bank ala a blood bank. Apparently natural milk helps premies and sick babies. I learned about this business when the New England Milk Bank won the “…

Yahoo spurned one offer in the last week—but are they already courting another? It’s Valentine’s Day, and the timing is perfect for a love triangle. Although Rupert Murdoch states last week that News Corp was not interested in Yahoo, we all know that was junior high code and secretly Murdoch was doodling NWS + YHOO all over his algebra notebook.

Just got a note from a communicator (great title) at Yooba.com, a web-based service that’s preparing to launch this Spring. The video is a little cryptic but the content on the site is compelling:

Below is what happened in search today, as reported on
Search Engine Land and from other
places across the web.
From Search Engine Land:
Vertical Search Provider Healthline Beefs Up Content, FeaturesHealth is one of the “strategic consumer verticals” that Microsoft has identified and is an important consumer and advertiser category for all the big search engines and portals (Google is soon to launch Health after delays). There’s also Steve Case’s much-hyped Revolution Health. (WebMD is the category leader according to…

Late last year I began the process of hiring a handful of writers to help create new content for Digital Photography School (I wrote a little about it here). I ended up taking on 6 new writers on a trial basis to write one post each per week. It’s been a fascinating process to go through and it’s taught me a lot about how I blog as I move more from a blog writer to a blog editor role.

There has been much speculation in the mobile world that the iPhone will kill WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) thanks to its PC-like web browsing experience. This topic was even discussed by a panel of experts at the 2008 OMMA Mobile.
The verdict? Hmmm, probably not. Right now.
There are a few reasons for this. Unlike the PC, the mobile environment is highly fragmented with no standardized operating system, so multiple formats will likely prevail. And while the iPhone has a killer browsing experience (and has boosted browsing among its users way above the norm, 84 compared to 11% according to M:Metrics), they still represent a small number of the phones out there.

When a startup receives financing it will need to setup a Board of Directors. The Board probably existed beforehand, but was made up only of the founders. Once funding takes place, the angels or VCs will want a seat at the table. There’s no surprise there.
But there’s another kind of board that’s equally important. In some ways it’s more important (although it doesn’t have any control over the business), and that’s the B…

Entrepreneurship Week starts on Friday, February 22nd. The events are free and open to the “greater Stanford community” (which I would define as anyone who can get to the campus). Here is the agenda that features a bunch of great workshops and sessions. I can’t imagine you could a better way to spend a few hours or days if you’re an entrepreneur than attending this event.
