Yahoo may have said
no to being acquired by Microsoft, but Microsoft isn’t having it. The
company has put out a
statement
saying the rejection was "unfortunately" and pledging to "pursue all necessary
steps" to get what it called its "full and fair" proposal to be accepted.
The wording suggests that Microsoft will not up its offer, as some have
expected. It also suggest in taking about "stakeholders" and "shareholders" that
the company will undertaking a sustained effort to have shareholders put
pressure on Yahoo’s board.

Posted by randfishMystery Guest and I were talking over dinner tonight about how ours (the current 25-30 year old age group) is essentially the last generation to experience a pre-Internet childhood. If you turned 18 after ~1999, your upbringing was probably impacted, at least in part, by the rise of the web (at least in regions with high Internet penetration rates). What will we tell our children about those fanciful days before search engines, websites and on-demand knowledge wrapped themselves into our collective psyches?

Search Engine Land and from other

From Search Engine Land:
Microhoo: Divining The Probabilities Yahoo’s board has officially rejected Microsoft’s bid for the company, but that’s likely just a gambit to either pressure Microsoft to sweeten its bid, or stall for time while Yahoo explores other alternatives. So what’s the likelihood of Microsoft actually succeeding in its takeover attempt? There are many possible…

Mark Flannery co-founded Kiva.org with his wife a few years ago and their success has forever altered the way entrepreneurs in the developing world get access to the small amounts of capital that can make a huge impact on their businesses and lives. In doing so they’ve also opened up an entirely new channel of micro lending to businesses and individuals who would like a way to help the smallest of businesses get going.

In the launches and relaunches category, Yahoo! launched its lifecasting service Yahoo! Live — everything I’ve read about it so far basically says it’s still very beta-y (i.e. not too stable) and doesn’t really have any stand out features compared to similar services. Seems kind of like S…

The other week I had my makeup done for my “Attack of the Show” appearance at my neighborhood salon. The young seemingly bi-racial woman who did it must have been around 19 or 20. She asked me if I minded listening to some hip hop and then raved about Lupe Fiasco, telling me how his brand of hip hop was much smarter than most of what’s out there. Since my musical tastes are still stuck in the 70s, I hadn’t really listened to Lupe before this, and admit that I dug it. Today, when I was doing my regular scan of what teens are writing about in their high school newspapers, I spotted this article about how skateboarding, and longboarding in particular, is becoming popular again (beyond hard core skaters and influencing fashion as well). From t…

Microsoft has acquired Danger, Inc., maker of the T-mobile “Sidekick” device and the Danger operating system and platform. Danger has been hailed as highly innovative and its platform and OS pre-dates the iPhone (2000). There’s a bit of an irony here in that Danger was co-founded by Andy Rubin who is the chief architect behind Google’s Android open platform.

I read PSFK’s post titled “MTV’s Game Plan & The Kids’ Rejection Of Ads” and wanted to share some of my thoughts. When it comes to youth/advertising, I think the move is towards branded entertainment vs. traditional ads — sponsors can “bake in” contextual ads within video games or create immersive/branded experiences in virtual worlds. Product placement and branded entertainment on MTV and youth oriented television shows is already rampant. But most of the ads on social networking sites like MySpace are still just banner ads, even when they’re “takeovers” or “skins.” And when they try to be more immersive like with Beacon, they feel invasive. Like you can tolerate a contextual billboard in your video game when you’re driving through a city or even enjoy flying your virtual Scion, but seeing your friends’ purchases in their Newsfeed feels doesn’t feel quite as natural — because you are wondering whether your friend is even aware that it’s showing up there.
