ProBlogger Server Issues

Just a short note to let readers know that I do know we’re having some server errors at the moment on the site. The tech team at b5media are aware of it too and are working to resolve the issues. In short it’s symptomatic of the massive growth we’ve been experiencing lately as a network.
Apologies for the inconvenience - it’s largely happening around the posting of comments as far as I can see - it might be worth copying your comments before hitting publish. Refreshing will usually resolve the issue.

Microsoft tinkering with scary-smart ad spots

The web ads are ’scary-smart’ because they figure out when and where to insert extra ad content, and for who.
“Microsoft Corp.’s online advertising researchers will spend this year teaching computers to be smart about sticking ads into video clips, and to be even smarter about targeting ads to specific Web surfers.
Microsoft showed off a handful of early-stage advertising projects at its headquarters Tuesday that may or may not turn up as part of Microsoft’s Web advertising platform.”

Google China to Take on Baidu with Free MP3s

The success of Baidu, China’s leading search engine, can be attributed largely to its generous offering of MP3s - both legal and illegal - in its query results. But Google’s set to change all that, reports the W…

Google Adds Forms to Google Spreadsheets

Forms - Google SpreadsheetsI’m an avid user of Google Spreadsheets. Google just added an intriguing feature that Marketing folks might be interested in to do data capture (example: contests and opt-in programs) without the need for professional development. You can now build a form to post directly to your Google Spreadsheet!

Hire a call center? Are you crazy?

Internet Retailer reports this month that more and more online retailers are outsourcing their calls. In fact, they predict that spending on outsourced contact centers will almost double within a few years.
In our experience with call centers, I have learned the hard way that you should be cautious, very cautious when choosing one. Here are some things we have learned over the years:
1) Place a lot of test orders. Your business reputation is on the line with agents that probably could not care less. You had better check up on them a lot. When you call and place test orders, you will be amazed by some call center agents–amazed that anyone can be that stupid. Just remember that those people are reflecting on your brand.

Yahoo Internal Letter: We’re Thinking

Jerry Yang sent out a company-wide letter to Yahoo employees today. But don’t worry, unlike lots of internal information over there, this letter wasn’t leaked. As Search Engine Land reports, the letter was filed with the SEC (in compliance with law).
The letter, addressed to “yahoos,” is a status report that appears to be aimed at reassuring employees that they are looking carefully at the alternatives.

Do You Call Yourself a Blogger?

This might sound like a strange question for someone behind a site called ProBlogger to be asking - but do use the word ‘blogger’ to describe what you do? In this post I want to explore some reasons why I’m using the term less.
In short there are three reasons why I’m using the term ‘blogger’ less and less to describe (and think about) what I do:
1. Your Competitors Don’t Limit Themselves - Why Should You? …

Building Common Sense into Software

Here’s a case of technology falling short of it’s intended goal. I stopped at a local gas station, SuperAmerica, to top off the tank. I’m not particularly attached to any one gas station brand, but SA gives me a free hot dog or every 10,000 gallons of gas I buy (or something) so I carry around their loyalty card.

However, on a recent trip, I encountered this new step at the gas pump:

New—And Unfortunate—Changes To Google Local Search

Google recently made some quite significant changes to the “OneBox” result that appears at the top of the result page when you do a query that Google determines has local intent. Previously, Google would display three local search results in the OneBox area, with at star rating and a review snippet. Now Google returns 10 local results listed A-J.

Once I’d finished reeling from the potential imact this would have on our natural traffic I began to run through all the potential implications. What I discovered was quite a naive system—one that feels more like something Google would have created several years ago rather than an “improvement” to current Google search results.
