Local Employment Growth Falters

21 March, 2008 housingblogs | Comments (0) @ 21:13

The California Employment Development Department’s employment estimates for February indicate that San Diego job growth has essentially flattened out. The sectors that thrived during the housing boom are now suffering through the bust, and while employment is growing outside of the housing boom industries, it is doing so barely enough to offset the housing-related losses.

It’s been nearly two years since I looked at the soft landing question with respect to affordability in a post titled Seattle Soft Landing: Do The Math. Since then, the affordability picture has changed, and we at Seattle Bubble have done a lot more research into historical data, so now seems like a good time for an update to this subject.

Higher Lending Standards Lowers Demand for Housing

21 March, 2008 housingblogs | Comments (0) @ 19:21

From the Oregonian:Raising the bar for obtaining mortgage insurance in central Oregon’s Deschutes County likely won’t affect many of the buyers at the region’s proliferating destination resort developments because those buyers generally can put 20 percent down on their home purchases, said Tom Greene, principal broker at RE/MAX Equity Group in Bend and president of the Central Oregon Association of Realtors.B…

21 March, 2008 housingblogs | Comments (0) @ 18:45

A former diner and gas station on the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Roslyn Road is the site of another new CVS drug store.
The 1.31-acre Mineola site will soon have a 13,000-square-foot CVS store with a drive thru to challenge the Walgreen’s across the street.
Smithtown-based Island Associates represented CVS and persevered through an 18-month-long approvals process with the Village of Mineola. CVS has entered into a $13 million aggregate lease for the property from owner BRT Realty, which was represented by Gary Brody of Brody Realty in Melville.

Op-Ed Friday: An Open Letter

21 March, 2008 housingblogs | Comments (0) @ 18:21

It’s Friday, and I thought I’d take a moment and respond to "Wilson" who’s multiple comments were in Igor’s clutches this morning.  I rarely let Igor have his way with posters, but I thought I’d respond with this open letter, so Wilson will know why he’s the exception:

Wilson-
As you suspected, your comments will not post. While I never allow posters to be insulted, posters are free to insult me. However, the language must be family friendly, and you would need to demonstrate a basis for your insult. Therefore, "Twist is a moron." is unacceptable. Were you to say "Obviously Twist is a moron, as the data from the Texas A&M Real Estate Center Clearly shows…." that comment would be allowed through….

The old adage doesn’t apply to everyone. Not every kid who touched the hot stove never touched it again. Maybe 1 out of a thousand kids doesn’t learn that the darn thing is still hot. Call them challenged, slow, what-have-you, but they don’t get it.
