Why you need to know credit score

If a person will apply for a loan or a credit card account in the United States, the financial institutions will look at the person’s credit score. The credit score is simply a numerical expression that is based on the statistical analysis of a person’s credit files that will represent the creditworthiness of the person. The score is primarily based on the credit report information as provided by the credit bureaus. The person’s creditworthiness is the likelihood that the person will pay their bills. The score is primarily based on the credit information report that can be provided by three major credit bureaus which include Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

My Views On the Potential Chrysler Split Up…

In March of 2007 I said that Magna buying Chrysler would be a good thing. And I specifically said that private equity would botch this up.
Magna knows the car parts industry through and through. Thus unlike other private equity companies there is a good chance that Chrysler would survive and prosper.

I did not think that […]

Yes, momentum trading systems can win in a bear market

How has my system performed in this bear market? I???m pleased ??? at the moment ??? because it has kept me out of the market.
As I???ve mentioned before, my system is to buy aggressive-growth/momentum stocks in a bull market, and short in a bear market. I haven???t done as much short selling as I???d have liked because the past year has been a transition period with the birth of our first child and a move to self-employment.
Momentum trading gets a bad name for a number of reasons. Firstly it is viewed as a bit racy. People are suspicious of traders who jump into stocks for a quick ride and then hop off. In my view, however, momentum traders are allocating capital to the fastest-growing companies in the economy.

Flip

My wife bought me the new flip camera for our anniversary this week, so I thought I would share a video of my dog. Enjoy….The market has been rebounding nicely this week from terrifying lows. I have not been following the markets too close this week as I am on vacation and don’t need the added stress, but I like the movement in the financials. I picked up some BAC last week that I am up pretty nicely in (although I had bought some in the 18’s, so I am about even on this position). I am following some growth stocks and looking for an entry point on GOOG and UA. I believe we are going to be playing this yo-yo type market for a while between 10k and 8k on the dow. I am going to continue to trade the big movers in the financials (like BAC) in hopes of some quick jumps. …

Five for the Weekend #17: Thanksgiving Edition

The US markets are closed for the Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow (Thursday) and re-opening for a shortened trading day Friday. But Controlled Greed is declaring victory and taking the rest of the week off. Some posting may resume between now and Monday, but probably not. So here are five items you might check out in this special early edition of Five for the Weekend.
The BCE (BCE/NYSE) deal has apparently c…

Calculating Gross Margin for Apple’s iPhone (4Q08)

APPLE INC (nasd:AAPL) According to my calculations, deferred revenue booked from Q4 iPhone sales carries a 55.5% gross margin. Gross margin on the deferred revenue (DR) booked from the first generation model averages about 29%. The average gross margin for total booked DR is 47.8%.I derived this number from the “deferred expense under subscription accounting“ that Apple disclosed in its annual filing (10-K) in conjunction with the deferred revenue (under subscription accounting) also reported. I used some rather extensive math to come up with the 55.5% number which I discuss below….

Let’s Look at the Potential Upside

So far some great action on the day - and the casino is yet to open. 3 PM is now at the doorstep - would you like a drink with your rally? I just hope all the folks who jump in at 3 PM for their one hour of work did not leave early for the holiday - we need their buying power; would really like to hold this S&P 770 level so I can drink Kool Aid in great quantities tomorrow….

Bookkeeping: Closing CME Group (CME) and Alliance Data Systems (ADS)

I am tidying up the portfolio as we have too many positions for this type of market where flipping ETFs every 48-72 hours is all that matters - I am going to close 2 of our smallest positions, CME Group (CME) and Alliance Data Systems (ADS)At this point, as 0.1% stakes in the portfolio, if these positions gained 40% from here it would have no impact to the portfolio so no reason to continue holding. I don’t really have conviction to add to them, since on a continued market rally I’d rather buy other merchandise first….

Bloomberg: Soros and Citadel Building up Coal Stakes

I’m still a fan of coal - this is why as I’ve dumped much of my global growth/commodity plays as hedge funds collapse - I’ve keep fertilizer and coal since they should be the LEAST economically sensitive. In theory you’d want your home heated or the ability to eat food even in a Great Depression - as opposed to say the need for copper to build new buildings. But that is sense, and the market does not use sense - it’s all pack trading and every commodity is either bad, or good. Program trading does not seem to discern between coffee, copper, natural gas, or potash. The irony is some commodity drops actually help miners (steel, petrol, et al) as their input costs fall… but again, that would be logical fundamentals talking and we can’t have that as we “student body left” trade….

Buckle (BKE) - Fundamentals Don’t Matter

The Buckle (BKE) is a great example of why there is no reason to do fundamental homework or look at individual stocks anymore. The market could care less about any positive news. Bookkeeping: Cutting Life Partner Holdings (LPHI) Stake

I am cutting Life Partners Holdings (LPHI) in half as it now approaches its 50 day moving average - unfortunately when we entered this stock the chart was tremendous but just our luck the moment we began buying it broke down. Without having the ability to have stop losses in Marketocracy.com, by the time I noticed this thinly traded stock was already down 10%ish so instead, I added to the position as it approached its 200 day moving average (mid $20s), so at least the average cost was lowered. In fact it ended up being one of our top 5 positions due to this maneuver….

How Borders Group Returned Value to Nobody

The poster child of poor capital management might just be Borders Group.Borders, which runs one of our favorite book stores in the country (Union Square in San Francisco) and goes by the ticker BGP, is the now-beleaguered bookseller spun out of K-mart long ago in happier times.Borders is also one of those companies that so desperately wanted to make Wall Street’s Finest happy—not to mention its own shareholders—that it spent all its cash, and more, to buy back stock….
