Stocks are cheap. Buy! (for the long term)

A few days ago I was discussing with a friend what might happen in the market.
I said there was a huge divergence opening up between short/medium-term tactics and long-term tactics.
The market still seems weak, despite the recent rally.
Sure we could have another bear-market rally, but I???m seeing nothing to indicate that stocks are going to make a sustained bull move any time soon.
For medium-term momentum traders that suggests the best place to be is in cash or short.

The Reluctant CEO of the Year

Derek DeCloet has an excellent profile of Fairfax Financial’s Prem Watsa, who is the Globe and Mail’s CEO of the year. The article begins with how Watsa has reluctantly started giving more press interviews:But that doesn’t mean he likes it. And it doesn’t mean he wants the
attention any more than he did a decade ago, before all the trouble
started, when he was still labelled a “recluse” and Bay Street loved
him and his peculiar creation, insurance and investment company Fairfax
Financial Holdings Ltd. Over the decades, …

Understanding trend following in the context of investing

In the world of finance, trend following is not about fashion. Trend following is a strategy in investing and this is the practice that tries to take advantage of the long term moves of the system. For the observant and the interested investor, it is critical that market moves should be watched and should be projected in the long term so that informed financial decisions can be made. Stock market moves up and down, and it is expected that the student of trend following can profit from these up and down movements of the stock market.

Does This Market Have A Bottom?

Each time the market rallies, the question is asked ‘Was yesterday the bottom?’ Up to this point the answer has been a resounding ‘No’ as the market quickly resumed its downward slide after each rally. Recently, a columnist asked some Wall Street pros, people who deal with hundreds of millions, billions, of dollars every day, what they are looking for that will tell them the worst is finally over and the market is beginning to recover? Here are their responses:…

Read Financial Footnotes, Invest Safely

Financial footnotes are like the fine print on an aspirin label. You need to read the fine print to realize that aspirin side effects include gastrointestinal bleeding. Financials footnotes are to companies as fine print are to drugs. For companies, their labels can be found in their SEC filings. Unfortunately, businesses are a lot more […]…

Penn West Energy dropped from Income Portfolio

Today I have “sold” the position in Penn West Energy (PWE: 14.41 -0.18 -1.23%) out of this site’s Income Portfolio. The combination of falling oil and natural gas prices, a stronger dollar and growing unfavorable Canadian tax laws have driven down the stock price. I believe the next shoe to fall is a cut in the distribution. U.S. shareholders have already taken a 17% payout reduction on the dollars strength.

Irony

There is great irony in the fact that the day after Thanksgiving used to be a trader’s dream in that many institutions did not participate and the volatility in the market and especially smaller cap stocks was intense…. now, in the Year of Volatility - this is shaping up to be one of the quieter days in months. Just another bizarro event. In the category of badly designed instruments, both Ultra Real Estate (U…

Futures contract guide

Your futures contract is a financial contract in which two parties agree to transact a set of financial instruments or physical commodities for future deliver at a particular price. When you buy a futures contract, you are simply agreeing to buy a commodity that has seller has not yet produced at a set price. The future date is called the delivery date or the final settlement date. And the official price of the contract at the end of the day’s trading session on the exchange is called as the settlement price.

Frontline slashes dividend

After paying dividends of $2.75 and $3.00 for the first two quarters of 2008, Frontline Ltd. (FRO: 33.01 0.00 0.00%) has elected to pay only 50¢ for the 3rd quarter to shareholders of record on Dec. 9. As the largest publicly traded oil tanker company, Frontline has been popular with investors due to their generous dividend policy. Since 2001 FRO has paid out over $53 per share in dividends. As I have cautioned many times when discussing tanker companies, these companies pay out dividend on the amount earned in the quarter by leasing their ships on the spot market. These dividend will vary wildly and the patient investor will be rewarded, but there will be some bumps along the way.

Vikram Pandit: Citigroup too big?

Quite curious that Mr. Pandit decided to go to Charlie Rose for his first TV interview and not face a financial journalist…
In this part of the interview, he tackles the question of Citi being too big. He actually states that it is not too big to manage but then again, he says that they have just sold 18 businesses! We assume that what he wanted to say is YES it was to big to manage but we’ll be fine once we scale it down!

Opinion on Valueclick (VCLK)

Just before discussing Valueclick, I want to do a quick comment. Last week, we had suggested going long Baidu (BIDU) against a short on Yahoo (YHOO) and while like all pics on this blog, it is a long term play, the investment returned 27,52% in 1 week* and so I would cut half of my position to take the profit, it’s a major move for a one week investment and so locking in part of it makes sense in my opinion.
*Since this trade involves no cash, we calculate return with the locked up amount on such a trade (70% of the short position).
