Here’s a contest for you — since y’all did so badly on the last one — can anybody find me a value investor who isn’t saying that there’s loads of cheap stocks out there and that they’re pretty bullish over a medium- to long-term time horizon? Buffett, Grantham, and other devotees of Ben Graham all […]…

Chances are you’ve been hearing more lately about the late economist John Maynard Keynes. But I’d like to dwell on his success, much less well known, in managing money. I first heard of Keynes being a successful investor from Warren Buffett some years ago.Keynes managed portfolios for King’s College, Cambridge and the National Mutual and the Provincial Insurance companies. His performance for King’s College was especially impressive. H…

Get your fresh hot US taxpayer money…. Regions Financial (RF) joins the party along with a handful of others. All we need is BB&T (BBT) to partake and then all 3 of our banks are backstopped by the US government, with Hank P. as our fellow shareholder. RF continues to make dramatic almost daily 10-20% moves; this holding makes me sea sick….

Some good stories on 60 Minutes this weekend that relate to the website. I read on another site that no bank would agree to be interviewed with 60 Minutes on the credit default swap issue. Some interesting historical items in this story as well - i.e. I never heard of a bucket shop of the 1900s… about a 15 minute video here if you are interestedThe world’s financial system teetered on the edge again last week, and anyone with more than a passing interest in their shrinking 401(k) knows it’s because of a global credit crisis. It began with the collapse of the U.S. housing market and has been magnified worldwide by what Warren Buffet once called “financial weapons of mass destruction.”…

Year 2, Week 12 performance of the mutual fundComments: Completely at a loss this week as we continue an avalanche of selling pressure; effectively the margin call of a lifetime. Despite sitting 1/3rd in cash we managed to lose a lot more than the market and stock after stock was dismembered, far more than the markets. Thursday, half the stock we owned lost from 7-18% - and the market was actually up that day. Friday we were hammered again. I’m at a complete loss as nothing works on the long side - not good earnings, not stock buybac…

I've been mentioning over the past several days that the technical action in the indices has improved enough to where I have begun dabbling on the long side, but we are not out of the woods just yet as indicated by Friday morning's limit down move ahead of the bell. Considering Thursday's minor capitulation […]

It is Oct. of 2008, Dow is hovering at around 9,000, about where it was 10 years ago. S&P 500 is about 10% lower. If you have been investing an S&P500 index fund, you are losing money even if you have been doing dollar cost average. Where are we with market valuations? What kind […]…
