Please note - I wrote this entry last night before our now once weekly market crash… hence I was in a somewhat benign mood. Not so much today - despite getting a lot of this action correct; we’re certainly suffering like everyone else, but thankfully less so. But still a lot of financial pain despite forecasting much of the disaster and taking a contrary view versus the punditry in financial America a year ago. Sometimes it is hard to believe all these things can come true even if intellectually this is what you believe to happen; we have been programmed to believe these type of things “just can’t happen”. But they are. …

I keep looking at this dirt cheap Brazilian homebuilder Gafisa (GFA) and only watch it get cheaper. Down 22% today. I suppose if you have deep pockets and don’t have to answer to outside investors you can be like Sam Zell and just buy on the way down, knowing at some point people will realize Brazil is not falling off the map. But he is probably already down 25% on his latest batch of purchases - in days. For the rest of us, you can only watch in horror even if you don’t own it anymore. We sold G…

A bevy of articles of late on the slowdown hitting China - so much for decoupling. We’ve noted the rising price of Chinese imports throughout the past year in the import price reports as we watched inflation. Now we can see first hand the behind the scenes story. This is all building to a much higher inflationary environment in the 2010s for Americans and in fact Westerners who have benefited from outsourced manufacturing. Eventually safety standards rise, living standards in those countries rise, wages rise, et al. And that has to be passed along into the cost. This was the first year that trend of lower prices from China reversed….

One of our old favorites, Illumina (ILMN) is being blasted today post an earnings report that I don’t see as negative. I am a bit confused on why the stock is being dismembered but with the stock down so severely (-17%) and substantially lower from where I sold out of the position I am going to reintroduce this name to the portfolio. We sold the last of our Illumina on Sept 8th …

One of our readers actually emailed us the link. This video is from the Enspire Learning Network and does a really good job at clearly explaining the current financial crisis.
This is not our first post on ‘understanding the financial crisis’ but this is probably the clearest explanation: it explains how mortgage based assets were bought and sold in the hope of making money from the interest payments, how this strategy worked until the combination of leverage and riskier assets lead to the financial meltdown we are witnessing today…

As mentioned one of the bigger players in the foreign exchange market are the hedge funds. Hedge funds are the private investment funds that are open to limited range of investors and these are permitted by regulators to undertake a number of activities than the regular investment funds. Hedge funds are also known to pay performance fees to its investment managers.
Usually hedge funds are known to invest in a broad range of investments and these investments may range from shares, debt, commodities and even works of art. But each of these hedge funds will ultimately decide where to invest the money and will usually develop their own set of investing strategies. These companies get their name from the fact that these companies often seek to offset potential losses in the principal markets by hedging their investments using many methods like short selling.

Following up on our post yesterday in regards to the credit card issue - this is a very related story from Bloomberg. As I say, this won’t be a “choice”, it will be a necessity. This is a key point to understand not just because its “economic stuff” but because if you are making investing decisions over the next 2-3 years you have to look through the punditry who has been screaming for well over 9 months now to buy “consumer discretionary” because “the consumer will be back soon”. They continue to use the wrong model - the early 90s and early 00s recessions - those are corporate led recessions. We’re going back to the early 70s and early 80s models - consumer led recessions. We’ve warned about this since blog inception - it is only now dawning on even the financial folks - not to mention those folks outside the financial sphere who are completely missing this huge shift….

As already discussed various times, don’t worry about the volatility - try to profit from it!
The Enterprising Investor is focused on holding for the long-term and these swings should simply represent interesting buying opportunities… we actually recommend that you start placing daily Limit Buy orders say 10-15% below the current price of the stocks you have been following and are current targeting to take advantage of the deleveraging which is still taking place:
