There are seven reasons for investors to be bullish, according to James Altucher in his Financial Times column. The first three are:* Oil prices have halved. People will now be able to pay back their
subprime loans. Banks will have to start writing up the subprime debt
that caused this whole mess.* Stock prices have dropped to 2002
levels. The big difference between now and 2002: China, one of our
biggest customers, is three times the size….

As we state every quarter with Apple (AAPL) you never know how the masses will react to the traditional “smash the numbers and then lowball guidance by a large amount”. This time they lowballed guidance even more than usual, but with the absolute hammering in the stock, the tribe seems to have had enough red meat. After pummeling the stock all day, we’re seeing some rebound in afterhours but only to levels Apple enjoyed coming into the day. But it’s not a 30% down moment at least….

Regions Financial (RF) earnings are out today and similar to our other banks we see degradation but a still profitable company. They “missed” but bank earnings in this environment are a complete dart throw so that’s not the point. It is always hard to know what is priced into a stock or is not; the stock opened down, but on word they have qualified for the government’s bailout err assistance program (I believe the qualification criteria are “are you a bank”? If so “yes, you’re in the assistance club!”) - the stock jumped to a +6% day. With government hand A helping on one side and government hand B (Federal Reserve which should be lowering rates AGAIN soon enough) helping on the other, you just have to believe at some point in 2009 some of these banks are going to be among the best performers. All hands are on deck. At which point we’ll sell these things off and never look at banks again for another decade - boring…. we should be chock full of more interesting stocks like homebuilders by then. :)…

A year ago, people were questioning if the subprime crisis that began in the summer of 2007 in the United States would spread to India. It was pointed out that India has not been a major investor in US subprime mortgages, and that […]…

A few readers have been sending me some great information/recommendations on energy royalty trusts, and I’ve been doing a lot of homework on the group. There is also another subset of companies which are energy related master limited partnerships which I only started doing homework on the past week - but I’m going to get on this train in case it takes off now and then continue doing homework. It has been quite awe inspiring to see even the safety sectors hit this badly - one of them should of been healthcare, but there has been so safety in this storm. I’ve stuck with contract research organization firms in general, despite eroding charts. ICON (ICLR) continues to execute seemingly unaffected by the credit crisis. Unfortunately the chart is not a “buy” until we get back north of $37 or so.E…

September sales for the Sacramento region and southern California continued to show strong increases. I have been providing regular monthly updates on this site concerning the sales results for the Sacramento region with occasional data on the rest of California and Nevada. For September the region did not follow the usual seasonal slowdown at the end of summer and sales continued to increase.
Sales for the three county Sacramento area increased 135% over September 2007 sales. Sacramento county and West Sacramento sales increased 8% from August and exceeded 2,000 closings for the first time since August 2005. The median home price continues to fall with over 60% of sales consisting of bank owned real estate. Available inventory also fell 31% from a year earlier and now represents a 3-4 month supply. Quote from Michael Lyon, CEO of Lyon Real Estate on why prices continue to fall in the light of tightening inventory:

I expect Apple (AAPL) to have good earnings and their custom lowball guidance. Which they will beat in 3 months. This is what they always do - but the market reacts randomly to this “guidance game” - some quarters they are fine with it, some quarters they go into panic taking the company at its word. January 2008 was an example of panic and we were caught red handed by a plummeting stock as rats jumped off the ship. 3 monts later the company trounced analysts estimates but it didn’t help stop us from losing our shirt. Lemmings do not act rationally. …

BBC NEWS | Americas | Cuba claims massive oil reserves.
I have not found the news linked above anywhere else. This could be a benefit to the U.S. in the event of future normalized relations between the two countries. The states would be a natural market for increased petroleum production in Cuban waters. The report claims that the reserves in the coastal water are significantly higher than previously believed:

I am always amazed at how stocks so often “telegraph” news by their stock price action… not that insider information is ever leaked on Wall Street. Blackrock (BLK) is the one financial firm we’ve held through thick and thin since fund inception - it had been an… ahem… rock, in the market turmoil. But I closed the position out two weeks ago [O…

We’ve long warned about the credit card situation, and how it would be seen as a significant danger once we get through the discovery that more than subprime loans are the issue. Back at blog inception we mentioned the whole daisy chain would go - it was not a “subprime issue” as the pundits and authorities insisted - subprime was simply a symptom of the disease, not the disease. We said specific to mortgages the damage would feed the food chain from s…

I recently came across an old article from the New York Times offers us a view of retirement planning that we don’t often hear…are we saving too much?
According to them, the financial industry, with its ostensibly objective online calculators, overstates how much money someone will need in retirement. Some, in fact, contend that financial firms have a pointed interest in persuading people to save much more than they need because the companies earn fees on managing that money.
