Five for the Weekend #11

Another grinding week in the markets. One thing nice about it is this: I just subscribe to the most basic Comcast cable package, so I only can get CNBC (no Fox Business or Bloomberg). And CNBC has been running its Europe offering late at night instead of the usual infomercials (not entirely, but some hours). Some of the programming is actually quite good and, from the sampling I’ve witnessed, superior to the American stuff. With that observation, here are five items you might check out this weekend….

Bookkeeping: ‘Rising Tide’ Performance Year 2, Week 11

Year 2, Week 11 performance of the mutual fundComments: Yet another crazy week in a series of crazy weeks. The volatility this week was simply numbing. I guess it was an upgrade from the past few weeks when the only direction was down. I was shocked to see a stat scroll on the bottom of the CNBC screen on Oct 14th - the Dow and S&P 500 were only up 1 day (this Monday) for the month of October as of that point. That is staggering. Well we made it two days this week. But 2 days of upside every month is not really going to cut it for the longs…….

Hedge Funds May Cut 10K Jobs

It appears hedge funds are, much like Las Vegas, not quite as recession proof as many thought. After every abundance, is a shortage and after every shortage is an abundance….Hedge funds may cut as many as 10,000 jobs this year as they struggle with their biggest losses in almost two decades, according to estimates by executive search firm O…

History Is An Investors Greatest Teacher

The market volatility of this week has continued to keep investors on the edge of their seats. This roller coaster ride leaves many repeating the same word heard in most news reports on the subject:  Unprecedented.
Although this is the type of word that perpetuates the fear that has gripped the current market, to me it seemed more than fitting.  That is until I took a look back in history and chatted with a few of my “investor” friends that have been around a lot longer than I have.

Your Tax Money Paid to Investment Banks and Hedge Funds via AIG (AIG)

For those not following the AIG (AIG) saga - there is a lot of dirty laundry going on. First we were told its an $85 Billion bailout, but in a couple of steps after it’s now increased to $123 Billion (so far!) It has been very difficult to sell AIG assets to pay off this loan thus far.If you are into this type of thing and want some very interesting reading there is a d…

Fortune: Germany Invests in Green Jobs - in America

I’m been very negative on this economy for a long time, and many of our posts have demonstrated the coming (and now arrived) tsunami. However, even I get tired of posting the bad news, and am trying to find some nuggets of good. Let me tell you, it isn’t easy. Right now it is quite useless to talk about stock fundamentals since for so long it has meant nothing so it’s simply a frustrating time for anyone who picks stocks based on the business. So I’m just continuing research and reading about broader macro topics and keeping up to date on interesting companies and sectors, while we await any s…

Star Bulk loses contract, dividend cut?

Star Bulk Announces Updated Employment Status of Star Beta - International Business Times -.
When I wrote about Star Bulk Shipping (SBLK: 3.92 -0.16 -3.92%) last month I said  that this was definitely a high risk stock as indicated by its 20% yield. The positive for the company was the fixed contracts for its dozen bulk carriers that promised stable revenue for the next couple of years. With the news release linked above the company announced one of their contractors has gone bankrupt and put in doubt the receipt of $110,000 per day of revenue. Losing $10 million in quarterly revenue is a big hit for a company this size. In the current shipping environment it would be impossible to release the ship at any where near the lost contract rate.

Here’s why Indian banks are safe!

Source: Mint
Going by the fiscal 2008 data, none of the Indian banks, big or small, can fail.
This fiscal, beginning April, the situation has changed slightly for certain banks as their non-performing assets, or NPAs, are going up as consumers have started defaulting on their payment obligations with the rise in interest rates.
Their exposure to some […]…

Think the worst is still to come?

I’ve received a few questions wondering about what kind of investments have been performing well in this very tough environment because let’s face it, a lot of investors think we are far from out of this situation and that an important recession will occur and probably has already started. While personally, I’m far from […]…
