Sesit: Poorhouse Awaits Opponents of Globalization

The tendency to greater protectionism has been building for a while now — and may be put on steroids in the months to come. How much, if at all, depends on the depth of the economic downturn. As Michael Sesit writes in his new Bloomberg column:The first era of
globalization, which began in the 1880s, ended with the outbreak
of World War I in August 1914. …

Lessons Learned from this crash

by Warren Boroson - Gurufocus (Link)
1. Have around five years worth of cash equivalents available—to endure a prolonged bear market without being forced to sell anything. When I first encountered that piece of advice, from Jane Bryant Quinn, I thought it was excessively, ridiculously cautious. But now I believe that the older you are, the […]…

Is annuity right for you?

Annuities that you can get from your insurance company can come either as a fixed annuity or a variable annuity. Whatever you choose you can bet that these annuities share general benefits delivered to you. So why check on what annuities can do? Here’s a rundown of the many good things that can be delivered by annuities.
One good thing about your next annuity is that this will be ideal for estate planning. With the annuity, you get to pass the proceeds of the contract to your beneficiary without the delay and expense. The annuity also has the power of tax deferral. This is because you will not pay taxes on the earnings every year. You only have to pay on the taxes the moment you withdraw the annuity’s gains. This kind of contract doesn’t have contribution limits. Your contributions for other retirement savings like 401(k) accounts and the Individual Retirement Accounts have limits. With annuities you get better flexibility. The amount of contribution that you can get will depend on your capacity. You can also add to your annuity contract at any time.

Distress in Hedge Funds Continues in the Background

We have long since detached from fundamentals, but what makes “this time different” from other bear markets is the influence of hedge funds. We talked about it constantly during the past 15 months; how HAL9000 (computerized algorithms) were creating very weird action that made little sense, and how while controlling only 3% of the assets, estimates are hedge funds do anywhere from 30-60% of the trading. So despite their relatively small size, their impact is completely out of whack with their size. I wrote sometime in the fall/early winter that these unregulated pools of money would at some point reach a size that they would cause some major dislocations in the markets - but I was thinking years from now. I did not realize the leverage they were employing so their impact has been much larger than their size would imply…. so this day has come far earlier than I imagined. Every day we are reading some fascinating factoids from the industry….

Sunpower (SPRWA) Earnings

I am looking at the valuations of the 3 Chinese Solar stocks we own- all set to grow 40-60% (and coming off even faster growth rates) - I have PE ratios of 3.8, 4.9, and 5.8 on 2008 and between 3 and 4 in 2009. Meanwhile American Solar company Sunpower (SPRWA) is still @ 20 P/E. There has always been a premium for the American companies in this group but now we are reaching 75% discount for the Chinese merchandise. Anyhow, S…

New York Times: It’s 3 PM on Wall Street, the Hungry Bear is On the Prowl

Very interesting story in the New York Times; we’ve been noting the same thing - how nothing has mattered for the day until seeing what the market does post 3 PM when it appears forced selling is at its highest level. You cannot trust anything between 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM anymore until these coffers are emptied from people who are being forced out of positions….

BB&T (BBT) and PNC Financial (PNC) Results

PNC Financial (PNC) “missed” by more than BB&T (BBT) but the market has them both down 5% or so this morning. Even Wells Fargo (WFC) is down 7% today - miracle of miracles.PNC Financial (PNC)PNC Financial Services Group Inc’s (PNC) third-quarter profit fell by a greater-than-expected 39 percent,…

Peabody Energy (BTU) Continues to Execute

It’s a shame to watch these stocks in coal and fertilizer execute and be shot day after day. Until the hedge funds are cleared of all their inventory, fundamentals simply don’t matter. Peabody Energy (BTU) reported an excellent quarter today (beat earnings expectations by 56%) & raised guidance, but today’s 12% gain in stock price does not even offset yesterday’s loss - not to mention 3 months of going straight down. Just another company with a sub 10 PE ratio; join the pile….

Aircastle undervalued, again.

Although the current stock market is very frustrating for those of us who look at a stocks fundamentals when making investment decisions, I find the recent actions of Aircastle Ltd (AYR: 7.40 -0.64 -7.96%) to probably be the most frustrating of the stocks I follow on this site.
I became interested in Aircastle last spring when then significantly reduced their dividend to retain cash in the tight financial market. Yet in June the market knocked half the value out of the stock on the fears that the company’s aircraft leasing customers would have problems with the record oil prices. As these fears proved unfounded, the stock worked its way back up to around $14 providing about a 7% yield.

Valuing a Business - Seth Klarman’s 3 Methods

by Ye
“Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” says Buffett. Valuing a business is, therefore, a fundamental skill that every value investor must master to be able to discern the intrinsic value of a business from publicly available information.
The truth is all of us can recognize a discount when we see one. […]…

Kudlow Interviews Paulson

For those of you who missed this, here is the link to the CNBC site: here.
As you can imagine, it’s more of the same … however, one of the interesting points to follow is when they discuss about how they will make sure that the banks will use the money wisely. OK, we need healthy banks that are well capitalized BUT we also need to make sure that the capital injection is not simply used to get rid of the toxic stuff  but used to get the money flow going again!

3 Reasons You Must Invest In Dividend Stocks

As a dividend growth investor, I am frequently asked why I don’t invest in high growth stocks and, more importantly, why I believe investing for dividends is a more appropriate strategy.
In bear markets there are great buying opportunities for dividend growth stocks that are offering yields above their historical averages.  Opportunities to buy great dividend growth stocks at above average yields is a great way to finance your retirement and increase the compounding effect of your future income from these stocks.

Healthcare Services (HCSG) Increases Qtr. Dividend 7% and Others
