CBS Typical of Holdings in This Market

CBS Class B (CBS/NYSE) shares were bought for the portfolio in February 2006 at $25.61. They closed today at $8.62. Nearly every stock is getting punished these days, and media stocks especially so.CBS is a cheap stock, and may even deserve it, since it is thought of as a “boring old media company.” I say it’s cheap primarily because it yields more than 12% at current prices. The dividend looks stable and, while no shareholder could be content with the stock price performance, the shareholder payouts make waiting for the eventual recovery more bearable….

Weighing on annuities

One source of future income for growing families is the annuity. Annuity is easy to understand even by those who aren’t too involved with the market. Simply put, the annuity is the contract between you and the insurance company. Under this contract, you will make a lump sum payment for the insurance company or you can make a series of payments. What you get in return is that the insurance company will make periodic payments to you beginning immediately or at some future date as agreed. This kind of contract that you can have offer a tax-deferred growth of earnings and may also include the death benefit that will be paid to the stated beneficiary a certain guaranteed amount.

Earnings on Tap for Thursday

A very busy day tomorrow…. not sure if it matters at this moment but we’ll keep reading about the fundamentals hoping that by 2010 it will matter again. For the short run, remember it is not the news but the reaction to the news that matters - when stocks begin to rally on bad news we can believe that light at the end of the tunnel is not a train. If any of us still have limbs…Our 2 larger regional banks both report tomorrow - B…

Want To Know Why Microsoft is a Value Trap?

People look at Microsoft stock and think, "hey this is cheap." Yet it turns into a value trap. Want to know why? I think I can sum it with one blog entry.
There’s been a lot of lively discussion since I confirmed yesterday that the official name for the next version of the Window client operating […]

Monday Just Disappeared

We are back at the very lowest point Monday - as if it never happened.Truly brutalYou know it is bad when you are near 40% cash, 15% short and still take a 5% hit.S&P 840 was Friday’s low - I thought we’d retest it ‘at some time’ but did not expect it 48 hours after the biggest up day in history? This market simply saps all hope.EDIT 4:30 PM - here is how we did today; I usually don’t post daily results but with these massive moves up and down we’ll post as many as possible. Well we enjoyed a brief stay back over $9.00 yesterday. Brief being the key word. The lack of short ETF exposure was a negative today, despite a very high cash position. Thankfully we took a ton of profits from that rally - beating the market by 4% never felt this bad. …

Myth: US Corporations Have Among the Highest Tax Rates in the World

This is quite an amazing statement - we are told relentlessly that we need to reduce taxes for corporations (they are stated at 35%) so they can create more jobs (overseas ahem). While I think it might be a truth for small businesses, it seems the bigger fish have gamed the system to perfection. Something to think about the next time we are told “we need to cut taxes for corporations to remain competitive” Remember folks, the % of GDP that is enjoyed by corporations versus workers has reached levels not seen since the 1920s (i.e. the workers in the country are seeing the lowest % of profits since right before the Great Depression) That’s what happens then the politicians are bought and paid for……

CSX (CSX) Earnings & Retail Sales Plunge

Before the main story, yet another 4%+ day - the volatility right now is simply unprecedented… 6% daily swings is starting to be the new norm. Simply jaw dropping moves. **********************Many US economy bulls were pointing to the strength in railroads this spring as summer as a sign that the US economy was just fine, thank you very much. We took the opposing view, saying most of the strength was simply shipping stuff overseas to foreign customers and suppliers. In A…

Wells Fargo (WFC) Can Do No Wrong to Eyes of Market; JPMorgan (JPM) Reports As Well

I honestly think every major mutual fund in America is flocking to Wells Fargo (WFC) - every dip is bought and this is one of the very few stocks over both the 50 and 200 day moving averages. They should have quite a powerful franchise when all is said and done. JPMorgan (JPM) reported today as well so here are some highlights from both. Since I already have 3 banks, I decided not to pull the trigger on Wells Fargo on this latest pullback although it could, right now, be the most bulletproof stock in the country….

Trina Solar (TSL) Confirms Full Year Guidance with Potential for Upside - Market Yawns

Just another day of good solar news ignored by the market - today is Trina Solar’s (TSL) turn. Some upside to previous guidance given in today’s press release - market could care less. On $3.53 estimated 2008 earnings the company now trades at under 4x earnings. I’d be aghast except that I have multiple companies growing 50-100% year over year in the 2-5x earnings range now….

Bookkeeping: Buying

Nuts. This market is just nuts.I am using S&P 960 as the support (weren’t we here just a week ago?)I am buying this morning’s dip across a broad range of names - all the same guys we let go yesterday morning into the 400 point rally. (keeping in mind we exited yesterday with about a 50% cash position, so it is all relative)It feels like groundhog day - but yet again it is “student body left” and “student body right”…

Perfect World (PWRD) Announces Share Repurchase Program

We don’t currently own Perfect World (PWRD) because the market, in all its wisdom, has deemed that the youth of China will stop playing video games, because Americans can’t pay their mortgages. Perfect logic. But Monday they announced the type of stock buyback program we like - both material in size, and with a firm timeline. At “up to” $100M over the next year, this will take just under 10% of the shares off the market at current market capitalization of under $1.2 Billion (if it is completely utilized). I would like to get back into this name at some point in the future when markets improve….

Nicholas Taleb at his best!

We have talked about Mr. Taleb in the past and have even reviewed his book ‘Fooled by Randomness’ (read post - here).
Nicholas Taleb has a reputation for having little patience when dealing with people who do not really know what they are talking about and being extremely passionate too! This is a segment of a show he was recently on when he tries to get his message across… trying to explain why we find ourselves in the current situation, the effect of leverage, complicated models, risk exposure, etc…

An alternative play on a financials rebound (VVR)

With everything that has been going on in the past few months, once of most discussed subjects is the use of mark-to-market accounting for illiquid assets.
