There are many who count themselves value investors. In fact, they are really what Seth Klarman calls “value pretenders”. It is easy to be a value pretender. I was one. Following Pabrai blindly into buying Delta Financial cost me a lot of play money. Importantly, I learned the differences between a value […]…

Well, this can’t really be considered a surprise. The BCE (BCE/NYSE) takeover by Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan looks shaky in the face of the world’s worsening financial crisis. Or, perhaps more likely, the deal might still go through but not at the C$42.75 per share price. From today’s Globe and Mail:Even though Teachers has an iron-clad agreement with its banks,
legal experts said the pension fund could run into political headwinds
if it sought to sue a bank that now has the British government backing
it as a major shareholder….

Insider trading has negative connotations in the market. Ask someone in the market what he thinks of insider trading and chances are he will tell you a lot of negative things about this kind of trading. This should not come as a surprise though; there are a number of instances where insider trading was indeed the reason why some personalities were charged and jailed. Two well known names that were linked to insider trading include that of Martha Stewart and Paula Rieker of Enron.

… a terrible close today, followed be a terrible gap down tomorrow morningThis is how bottoms are made - not the pull the bandaid approach we’ve been experiencing. Although this is quite horrific and beyond any standard deviation out there. 9% down day just recently and currently another 7.5%ish down day. 10 minutes to go and who will step up and be a buyer here. Nobody.I will post today’s performance around 4:30 PM; I broke my own self imposed rules of 0-25% short range this morning, and went close to 40% - along with s…

The energy stocks actually started the day halfway ok. But above you can see hedge fund liquidation 101 on a 1 day chart This is 15 minutes delayed - the stock is actually down another 4% in the last 15 minutes…. It really does not matter what your thesis is or was, when the margin clerk comes calling. Chesapeake Energy (CHK) along with Sandridge Energy (SD) were among the 2 biggest positions of many of the best and brightest funds. …

Shipping Lines Sail Uncertain Seas - WSJ.com.
The article linked above from WSJ.com (subscription required) started me to think about the ongoing prospects for the shipping related companies I follow. The gist of the article is that container shipping rates have fallen up to 75% reaching unprofitable levels. The Baltic Dry Index has fallen by 2/3 over the last several months hitting the bulk shippers. The Claymore/Delta Global Shipping ETF (S…

Looks like National City (NCC) has put itself up for sale… we should see a major wave of consolidations over the coming year and the big will get bigger. So that in the next banking crisis every remaining bank will need to be bailed out.Cleveland-based National City Corp. may be the next bank to succumb to the current wave of consolidation in the financial industry, according to a report Thursday. With most of the commentary focused on the financial industry and the economy at large, we thought it could be useful to highlight the kind of market cap destruction that has hit the famous ‘Tech Trio’.

Too many names to mention but I cut back a lot into this morning’s rally; it is very worrisome to see the witch hunt resume in financials - as we stated earlier this week the attack on Morgan Stanley (MS) continues. This one seems to be the latest focus and I’m worried after they make it go bankrupt, they will go after Citigroup (C). Both of these are huge entities with tentacles throughout the world so they both will be too “big” to fail and if must be government saved will cause another panic….

Well that was quick - we just touched on the UK plan yesterday, and said the US should (will) follow. Better to do it soon than in 6 months. It appears this is what “caused” the sell off in the last 30 minutes yesterday (along with a longer timetable to buy bad debts) as it took the market by surprise. The Bush administration is considering taking ownership stakes in certain U.S. banks as an option for dealing with a severe global credit crisis. An administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no decision has been made, said…

I once had someone from Britain tell me that the euro was doomed because, he said, most of the countries making up the euro-zone couldn’t stand each other. I don’t know if he’s right — just one person’s opinion, you know — but the current crisis looks to put a lot of stress on the euro at the very least. In fact, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard wonders if the 15-member euro w…

In recent months there have been a significant number of companies in serious financial trouble. Given the number of companies going out of business and the number of investors who lost huge amounts of their savings, I thought it would be prudent to introduce a metric to evaluate investments based on their likelihood of bankruptcy.
What Is A Z Score?
With all of the metrics, ratios and mathematical techniques used to evaluate the worthiness of a stock, it is almost possible to come across a new measurement technique every day.

The Stock Market as represented by the S&P 500 has been going down for sometime and the S&P 500 is now at 970.97.
Is it time for a (short covering) rally?
The current levels appear to be low enough for some bargain hunters to step in, and the shorts to start covering, starting a rally.
The S&P 500 (as of close of Wednesday, October
