On Monday, i was invited to a gathering of private bankers at a club. It was a networking session for private bankers in general to get together and have a good time and it wasn’t just exclusive to private bankers , there were investment specialists and research analyst and a couple of investment bankers hanging out there too.The word that got around most was speculation of which financial companies were going to go next. Some were saying Fortis was going next. In fact half a year back, someone told me that Merril was next to go but Merril was eventually acquired by Bank of America. The general theme of talk among the bankers seem to be that of “fear” and a random poll by me as i spoke about buying stocks from a valuation perspective was scoffed at mostly. And if it wasn’t scoffed at, there were some who might agree with me but they will do so on the quiet, not echoing their views out loud….

I thought Tom Stevenson had given up writing columns for the Daily Telegraph some time back to devote his energies to his day job. Perhaps he’s come back — he’s written several pieces recently — due to the market turmoils. And good thing he has. He talks sense. Wish we had more like him on this side of the pond.Stevenson’s l…

Well, the market is not at all happy with Mosaic’s (MOS) results. When you take a step back and look at the big picture everything still looks fine, but the stock market is not about the big picture - only “beating estimates” and/or “raising guidance” - if you don’t; you are toast. Mosaic is now toast based on how people will treat it.The stock is now lower than it was a year ago, despite these metricsP…

With my views on the economic drop being much deeper and longer than most I am beginning a stake in Portfolio Recovery Associates (PRAA) which is essentially a debt collection company - they buy debts gone bad from other companies for a cheap price and then try to collect more than they paid for. Sort of like what our government is going to do with $700B pretty soon.
Much like our push into pawn shops, and highlighting of “low on the totem” pole retailers - these all play off the same theme. The reasons to own this name should be quite obvious if you read the blog for more than a week. This should be a growth industry in the coming few years. Last e…

The Bank of Buffet is on fire. I am surprised at the target but then again he has 10,15,20 year time frames and General Electric (GE) will be around then.General Electric Co (GE) said on Wednesday it would sell $3 billion of preferred shares to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa), with another $12 billion in common shares going to the public….

I said in late 2007 (when many were arguing there would be no recession and in fact everything was fine since the Federal Reserve had our back) that 2008 would be the worst year in 2 decades for auto sales. Ford’s numbers are out and they are staggering (down 34%) Yet another group of companies who promised “2nd half recovery” back in the spring.T…

For the month of October Trade King online brokerage is adding $50 to new accounts originated through the ads I have on this site.
I personally use Trade King for my stock and IRA accounts. Besides extremely competitive commissions and fees, Trade King has an excellent array of research tools. Whether you are a buy-and-holder or active trader, Trade offers the tools you need to be more profitable. So take a look at what they have, open an account, make a trade and collect your $50.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) made headlines last week when the company agreed to purchase the operations of Washington Mutual. However, there was a bit less attention paid to the fact that the company issued an additional $10 billion dollars worth of stock in order to finance the transaction. Shares were offered to the public […]

Keep missing Wells Fargo (WFC) on dips; one of these days… it will be interesting to see whose assets they swoop up as the months go by and more banks fall by the wayside. The “state” will surely decide Wells will be one of the ultimate winners. I feel like I am writing this from Moscow…Wells Fargo & Co (WFC) …

Another calender quarter is behind us and it was one of the ugliest in my memory as far as stock investing goes. The market showed tremendous fluctuations with record daily gains and losses, but finished the quarter down significantly with the S&P500 down over 12% for the 3 months and the NASDAQ off almost 10%.
During the quarter I changed my Income Portfolio to an online actively managed system. I started the portfolio for the 2nd quarter of 2008 with equal dollar weighted positions in the stocks I had chosen for the portfolio. For the just departed 3rd quarter I started with the same equal dollar weighting and a portfolio value of $20,000. My new tracking system allowed the inclusion of commissions and a cash position. I opened the new portfolio on July 1 fully invested in 10 (10% each) stocks with a $4.95 T…

We already posted these graphs at the beginning of the year but recent discussions with some of our readers prompted us to post them again.
This fist chart shows performance after recessions, clearly showing the advantage of investing in small caps (furthermore, strengthening dollar will also help them):

Obviously “the market” has been terrible. But just how terrible and just how widespread is shown below via CNBC. Effectively, there has been nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide. It’s just been a matter of losing less than the other. I saw on CNBC Monday evening that this will be the fourth straight down quarter for the Dow Jones Industrial Average which would be the longest string since 1978. Quite amazing considering the bear markets of early 90s and early 00s….

On Tuesday, Mr. Buffett says, he was sitting with his feet on his desk in Omaha, drinking a Cherry Coke and munching on mixed nuts, when he got an unusually candid call from a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. investment banker. Tell us what kind of investment you’d consider making in Goldman, the banker urged him, and the firm would try to hammer out a deal…—The Wall Street Journal, September 25, 2008…

While the book is a bit dated (2000), It does provide some basic tenets of personal finance and investing that many investors will still appreciate.

There comes a point when you will need the services on an online brokerage firm, and when that happens prepare to be overwhelmed. There are a number of online brokerage firms that will compete for your attention and most of these firms will tell you that they are the best in the field. So are they the best in the field? The more proper question will be; is the brokerage firm suited to your needs and demands in the market? For this reason it is important that the proper selection of brokerage firms should be in order, and one factor that never fails is the price. But other than price, there are o…
