The previous posts on goal setting looked at what we can expect from the market, and the thoughts of trading coaches Ari Kiev and Brett Steenbarger.
Kenneth L. Grant, a risk manager who has worked with the likes of Paul Tudor Jones, is another who has written extensively on goal setting; in his case in the book Trading Risk: Enhanced Profitability Through Risk Control.

A comment from today’s earlier post, not really related to the post but very pertinent to what I do here:
Susan Calhoun writes:
What is going on with KHD? You were so positive on it but the stock has dropped a lot. Do you still think that it is a good investment? Thanks.
Times like these can be tough on stocks like KHD (KHD: 27.77 +0.41 +1.50%). It is a small cap stock with no following in the U.S. Most of the investing world does not even know what they do and they just sell away. In the meantime there is no positive news to give some support to the stocks price.

-Google is testing a new application that will provide walking routes available on your computer or cellphone. The current Google maps application provides driving directions that may not be the shortest route for walkers or bikers due to one way streets, parks, and tunnels. Tourists traveling to major cities like New York will benefit the most from this application although Google will add a disclaimer saying “use caution when walking in unfamiliar areas,” meaning “don’t blame us if you get mugged.” See the story h…

Reading a thread over at GuruFocus reminded me of a common problem people seem to have:
Have you actually read Security Analysis cover-to-cover? Has anyone on here?
I have. Several editions, several times.
A lot of people haven’t. I don’t think it’s a matter of dedication, enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, etc. I think it’s just a matter of being or not being a certain kind of reader.

Alcoa (AA) earnings are the traditional kick off of every quarterly earnings season. I don’t really follow this name much simply because, while it’s a basic material, aluminum is not exactly my favorite. But I’d like to show readers the reality behind the numbers, while the seals on CNBC were clapping and hooting and hollering about the “beat”. I’d also like to show you a trend you will be seeing this earnings season, and the ones coming - higher input costs. And squeezed profit margins - we’ve been warning about this “era” coming since last summer. It’s now here….

But no mas as the charts below show….

Vegas has been taking a hit from the slumping economy and the rising gas prices. Weekend gamblers that make the trip from LA are dropping off and vacationers are searching for less expensive alternatives. Airlines are cutting flights and gas prices are getting more expensive everyday. Here are a few stocks to follow if you are thinking about rolling the dice or want a good short…..

What a day - rarely do you get four 15%+ movers. Mercadolibre (MELI) which has been hit with the ugly stick (I’ve stuck with it), is rallying from a very oversold level on news the CEO won’t be selling a 1.8 million load of stock. Analysts are happy. Myself, I am sort of getting tired of this stock since either they are doing a proposed share dilution and that kills the stock or their management gets greedy (like all good public companies) and showers the publi…

We’re starting to get portfolio bloat with 60 long positions so I’m cutting the coal basket by 1 name - and Arch Coal (ACI) will be the one to go. I like *every* name in this space, but for now those who are identified more strongly with metallurgical coal are getting the attention, rightly so. The top 3 exporters of American metallurgical coal are Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Massey Energy (MEE), and ironically C…

Long time readers will know this is about the 678,211,121st (give or take) time I’ve cut back the fertilizer names as they break support at the 50 day moving average, only to reverse on me within days. [Jul 7: Cutting Some Fertilizer Exposure] I even wrote in that entryHistorically you want to buy them when they touch the 50 day moving average since they bounce, but with the market acting so poorly we could get some washout action….
