Biotech Breakout?

Over the past several trading days, we noticed that there is positive activity in the bio tech sector.

Amgen (AMGN), over the past four trading days has gone from $47 to $50, a gain of around 6%. The stock has broken out above the 200 day moving average too.

Celgene (CELG), over the past four days has gone from $64 to $69, a gain of around 8%. The stock has broken out above previous resistance…

TIPS: A Case of the Fox Guarding the Hen House?

Here’s the first sentence of Sandra Hernandez’ Bloomberg report:Treasury Inflation Protected
Securities aren’t living up to their name for bond investors who
say they can’t trust the way the U.S. government calculates the
rising cost of consumer goods.I have to give a guy credit — I saw none other than Jim Rogers point this conflict out on CNBC when TIPS were first announced back in the 1990s. This certainly makes the case for fighting inflation by diversifying across commodities, or at least gold, though I repeatedly remind you that I’m no player in gold or commodities….

Festival of Stocks at Fat Pitch Financials

This week is the 96th edition of the Festival of Stocks, and it is hosted by George at Fat Pitch Financials. George included my post from Sunday detailing my stock picking performance during the life of Controlled Greed. (Hopefully I’ll have better posts performance-wise in the quarters to come, but that’s looking really iffy in this market environment.)…

Special Situations Real Money Portfolio June 2008 Update

The Special Situations Real Money Portfolio hit a rough patch in June. The portfolio ended the month with a balance of $14,854.79. This is down 4% from what I reported as the June 6th Special Situations Real Money Port balance.
Two main issues came up in June. First, I got greedy with my new shares of Lorillard Inc (LO). When I received shares of Lorillard from the split-off of Loews (L), Lorillard was trading at $72.45. It looked like the shares might climb higher, but Mr. Market had other ideas. Lorillard dropped to $67 per share at the end of June and is now trading around $68.

China Medical Technologies, Inc. (ADR) (CMED) - Volatility and Profits

China Medical Technologies, Inc. (ADR) (CMED) and its often cited cousin Mindray Medical International Limited (MR) have both had more than their share of volatility this year. But on a relative basis, China Medical appears to be a better value with a more optimistic future. That may help to explain why China Medical […]

Some Evening Reading

Some interesting articles for those so inclined, that I came across over the previous week - some are relatively lengthy in duration. I highlighted some quick points in each. With the tremendous day to day (and INTRAday) movements in the markets we’ve been focusing more on stocks/sectors rather than the underlying economic stories of late, but we’ll try to keep posting some pertinent entries of that type somewhere in the hectic mix of stock news….

Missed Opportunity in Cash America (CSH)

I’ve been secretly studying the pay day lenders and wondering why in my “Pooring of America” scenario the charts were not better. Cash America (CSH) is one of the handful of names in this space and today we have the type of news I’ve been waiting for. And just like that the chart “improved”. Similar peers include Advance America (AEA) and D…

Bookkeeping: Cutting Back the Strongest Tech

I continue to be taken aback by the “tech is a safe haven” thinking, and in fact am going to take advantage of it - while I love the strength I continue to raise cash and am taking a deep cut into what remains in both Apple (AAPL) and Baidu.com (BIDU). Former in mid $170s, latter in mid $320s. I am holding Research in Motion (RIMM) simply because I was adding around these levels and it has taken some pain of late. …

Bookkeeping: Cutting some Fertilizer Exposure

Cutting 3 of the 4 fertilizer names here as they potentially break down. Historically you want to buy them when they touch the 50 day moving average since they bounce, but with the market acting so poorly we could get some washout action. Mosaic (MOS) for example *STILL* has a gap in its chart around $110 that I’ve been eyeing for an entire quarter. (currently just under $130) Just from history when there is real panic these names drop 10-15% in 1 day. See August 07, see January 08, see March 08. I’d like to buy these portions back in a panic sell….

Bookkeeping: A Few Bounces that I’m Selling Into

Trail Away

Although it is hard to find winners out there in the market, when you do find one you’d surely want to ride it to the top.  But then again, you should also know when to get out before you go crashing down with it.  The very important lesson here is: to not hold on too long.  From the start you should know how to squeeze all the profit from your stock.  You must be equipped on how to handle its possibilities and then be able to exit with all these profits still intact.

Bookkeeping: Cutting iPath DJ Livestock ETN (COW) to Raise Cash

Cash is quite low so I was looking through the portfolio for candidates to either sell out of or cut back… I chose iPath DJ Livestock ETN (COW) simply due to the fact I think it is more of a late 2008 or early 2009 story and have a flattish return at this point. If we do get a “last leg / swoon” down I want to have cash on hand to buy other ideas. My thesis on COW is not changing - but after a slew of purchasing last week I am poking around for some places to raise cash. This is one….

Slick personal finance website

Although my major interest is stock market investing, I spend time reading about broader personal finance issues and am always on the look out for good sources of information. However, I find most sites of the personal finance nature tend to be either too much hot button articles or too much into product pushing. We I received a contact email with the link for money.co.uk I checked out the site and was very pleasantly surprised by the site layout and wealth of information. Of course, this is a United Kingdom based website, so the information offered there is aimed at the local citizenry, but others offering this type of material could learn a lot from the design of money.co.uk.
